  1. Arrow Meeting Objective • Create group consensus about theconceptual model.

  2. Agenda • 2:00 Introduction • Brief recap on project to date • 2:10 Hierarchy • Design team explain concept, example (10 min) • Discuss relationship to information processing (15 min) • Decide on location of arrows (5 min) • 2:40 Consistency and Variation • Design team explain concept, example (10 min) • Discuss relationship to information processing (15 min) • Decide on location of arrows (5 min) • 3:10 Moderators • 3:25 Overall consensus

  3. Communication Objective • “We are making progress against cancer;research is contributing to that progress.”

  4. Project Goals Recap • Make recommendations for maximizing the impact of population cancer data:Templates for presenting dataGuidelines for cancer registries • NCI/ACS/CDC and other important cancer / health centers use recommended tools andapproaches • Share knowledge gained in the form of a book, co-authored by group • Develop a conceptual model to capture the relationship between information design and information processing

  5. Project Milestones • Hosted a stakeholder meeting at NCI • Authorship of a manuscript & conceptual model in progress • Context Established • Communication objective: “We are making progress” • Data formulation: CRC & Breast Cancer Data (CA & MO) • Priority audiences: General public, local news/media, local politicians

  6. Context: Data • Variables • Age, Race/Ethnicity, Sex, SES, Year (1988-2007), • Stage, Mortality, Survival, Zip

  7. Context: Audience

  8. Hierarchy • Hierarchy refers to the relative prominence of elements in a given environment. Elements with greater prominence are generally perceived first and understood to be more important. • Visual techniques include: • Grouping • Scale • Color (Hue & Value) • Shape • Placement • Cultural Perception

  9. Attention • Capturing audience • Communication techniques include: • Novelty • Violation of expectation • Overt statements of relevance • Aesthetics / appearance of relevance • Understanding • Comprehension of information • Communication techniques include: • Standardized forms • Social math • Metaphor • Numeracy • Elaboration • Personal relevance • Communication techniques include: • Tailoring • Targeting

  10. Consistency & Variation • Consistency and variation is the change of elements over time. Examples range from the spreads of a book, to the screens of an animation or a website, to even a series of sequential frames presented on a single surface. • Visual techniques include: • Small Multiples • Scale Change • Color Change • Shape Change • Placement Change

  11. Attention • Capturing audience • Communication techniques include: • Novelty • Violation of expectation • Overt statements of relevance • Aesthetics / appearance of relevance • Understanding • Comprehension of information • Communication techniques include: • Standardized forms • Social math • Metaphor • Numeracy • Elaboration • Personal relevance • Communication techniques include: • Tailoring • Targeting

  12. Next Steps • Revise conceptual model and manuscript (Feb) • Plan to host webinar or other web-based meeting to report back to Stakeholders (March) • Get started designing (Feb) • Adjust data requests as needed • Plan research design (Feb)
