  7. Czechoslovakia • Hitler wipes out Czechoslovakia as an independent country • Great Britain and France announce they will defend Poland • Most people begin to realize the only thing that will stop Hitler is a war.

Poland • Germans in Danzig demand union with Germany • Aug. 1939-Hitler makes a secret treaty with Russia- called the Nazi-Soviet Pact • Avoid a two front war • Stop Britain and France from helping Poland • Sept. 1, 1939- Hitler invades Poland • Sept. 3, 1939- Chamberlain declares war on Germany

  11. Why Appeasement? • Some British approved of Hitler’s policies • British hoped a strong Germany would stop the growth of Communist Russia • Many felt events in Europe were not Britain’s business • British wanted peace • Many British agreed with Hitler that the Treaty of Versailles was unfair.
