  4. Example • How much would the sum of 6 values have to increase in order for the mean of the 6 values to increase by 3?

Word Problems Involving Rate • if the data involves a ratio (fraction), it is a rate problem • find what the numerator would be if the denominator is 0 (this is the starting point) • find the rate: subtract the starting point from one of the distances, and divide by the time traveled to reach that distance • write an equation using r = rate, d = distance, t = time • check your work with another pair of values
