  1. Conspiracy Theories: Seeing history from different aspects

  2. What is a conspiracy theory? • A conspiracy theory explains an event as being the result of an alleged plot by a covert group or organization or, more broadly, the idea that important political, social or economic events are the products of secret plots that are largely unknown to the general public.

  3. JFK Assassination historically: • The ten-month investigation by the Warren Commission (1963–1964), concluded that the President was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald acting alone and that Jack Ruby acted alone when he killed Oswald before he could stand trial. • These conclusions were initially supported by the American public.

  4. Historical Suspect: Lee Harvey Oswald *USMC trained *Spent a brief period of time in the Soviet Union after being discharged from the Marine Corp. *Married Marina Prusakova, a Russia native *Communist leanings *Found 70 minutes after the assassination in a nearby theatre. * A weapon allegedly belonging to him was found in the building which authorities believed was where the killer shot President Kennedy.

  5. Possible parties that had motives to assassinate the president. • CIA • KGB • Mafia • Israeli Government • J. Edgar Hoover • Vice President Johnson • Fidel Castro and anti-Castro Exile groups

  6. Group Activity: • As a group, decide on a conspiracy theory. • What is the traditional knowledge of the event? • What is the conspiracy theory(ies) of this historical event? • Evidence?
