  9. Step 3: LAUNDRY PRODUCTS • 2. Detergents • Most common ( has phosphates) • Holds soils and dyes in water & keeps them from going back on clothes • 2 forms: powders (better for dirt) and liquids (better for food and grease) • “ultra” means concentrated • Some “combination” ones have fabric softners &/or bleach added • Amount needed depends on: • Size of load • Soil conditions • Hardness of water (hard needs more) • Size/style of washer

  10. Step 3: Laundry Products 3. BLEACHES • They change soil into colorless, soluble particles that detergents can remove • Whiten and brighten • Do NOT pour directly on clothes (holes) • Works best in warm or hot water • 2 Kinds: • Chlorine---very powerful—disinfects—use on whites • Oxygen---color safe---gentle—”Chlorox 2”

  11. Step 3: Laundry Products • 4. Enzyme Presoaks • “Biz, Axion” • Best for protein stains (blood, grass, chocolate) • Boosts power of detergent • For soaking or in wash machine

  12. Step 3: Laundry Products • 5. Fabric Softeners • “Downy” • For static cling, softer fabrics, less wrinkles, shorter drying times • Liquid or sheet forms • Don’t use with towels---loose absorbency

  13. Step 3: Laundry Products 6. Prewash Soil and Stain Removers “Shout” and “Spray n Wash” Especially good on polyester Good for greasy stains Treat spots quickly!!

  14. Step 3: Laundry Products • 7. Water Softeners • Inactivates minerals in hard water • Helps detergents work better • You use less detergent

  15. Step 4: Washing • Loading the Washer: • Put Detergent in first • Fill machine with water • Then add clothes • Fill the tub loosely so clothes move freely • Evenly distribute clothes around agitator

  16. Step 4: Washing: Setting Controls: • 1. Match water levels to load size • 2. Select water temperature hot—whites/heavy soil warm—medium soil/synthetic fibers/permanent press/knits cold—darks/brights/light soil 3. Rinse water cold is best saves energy and reduces wrinkles

  17. Step 4: Wash: Setting Controls • 4. Select “speed”---regular or gentle • 5. Select washing cycle---regular, permanent press or delicate

  18. Step 5: Drying Shake clothes to loosen them b/4 putting into the dryer • Check for “line dry” ones • Use permanent press cycle to prevent wrinkles • Remove clothes immediately—no wrinkles • Clean lint filter each time (FIRE!!) • Overdrying causes SHRINKING and wrinkles • Don’t overload

  19. LAUNDRY TIPS: • WARM OR HOT WATER BEST FOR CLEANING. • CHECK FOR COLORFASTNESS---WASH SEPARTELY 1ST TIME 3. SHRINKING MAINLY FROM OVERDRYING (OR HOT WATER) 4. DISH SOAP (DAWN) GREAT FOR GREASE SPOTS OR HANDWASHING

  20. STAINS • 1. TREAT STAIN ASAP!!! • 2. FIRST, FIND OUT WHAT IT IS • 3. CHECK COLORFASTNESS • 4. TREAT FROM BACKSIDE • 5. WASH AFTER TREATING • 6. BLOT!!! DON’T RUB!!!!

  21. STAINS:3 PROCEDURES TO DEAL WITH: • SOAK (about 30 minutes with enzymes) • PREWASH (cycle on machine) • PRETREAT (Shout, Dawn, Bar Soap, Paste of water and Detergent)
