  2. Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is a type of employment authorization that allows F-1 students to participate in employment off-campus. It is defined as any required internship that is an integral part of the established curriculum for a program of study. 1 To qualify for a CPT, you must take a class at UCI requiring employment off-campus.

  3. CPT eligibility: One year of continuous enrollment Job offer Normal degree progress UCI class requiring work off campus

Section 2: Continuation Section 2 continuation The following are adequate descriptions: 1 This internship requires the creation of software applications which the class course alone cannot provide. This work is required in order to fulfill the students’ research pre-requisite. 2 The student will develop marketing strategies for the accounting department. The student will work under my direct supervision. The experience will fulfill the class requirement. • F1 regulations do not permit employment authorization based on the following descriptions: • This internship is highly recommended. • The student will learn valuable tools. • This is a great opportunity for the student. • I will gain valuable experience with this internship.

CPT Process 3 1 2 • The new I-20 will serve as your employment authorization. • Turn in your application to the IC. • Walk-in days/hrs: • Tuesdays or Wednesdays 10:00 am to 12:00 pm • Or • By appointment any day during the week. • You will meet with an advisor and your application will be reviewed. • The IC will issue a new I-20 in 7 days with CPT authorization on the 3rd page. 4 • Return to the IC on the 7th business day.

  11. I-20 You can start your internship ONLY on the day Indicated on your I-20.

  12. CPT EXTENSION ADDITIONAL TIME NEEDED

If your authorized CPT requires additional time (beyond the quarter end date) you can apply for an extension of the current CPT. 1 CPT EXTENSION • You will need: • Copy of previous offer letter • A new CPT application with additional dates and detailed explanation for additional time needed • Copy of I-94 • Proof of enrollment (following quarter) • Apply 7 business days prior to the end date of current CPT

  14. A Note About the Offer Letter • If your CPT is going to last more than 1 quarter, the letter must state the proposed dates. • Make several copies of your offer letter. • Your internship application will be done on a quarterly basis as needed.

  15. recommendations • You must have been enrolled in 3 consequitive quarters • Apply early: backdating is not permitted • Work with your academic advisor for a timely CPT application • Full time CPT during the academic year will not be permitted • You can only start your CPT on the first day of the quarter, not earlier
