  2. Cause for Rejoicing • Restored • Redeemed • Refined • Rejoicing

  3. Three Messianic Images • Shepherd • Wailing Shepherd • True Shepherd • False Shepherd

  4. Conclusion • Appropriate response

  5. Wailing Shepherd • Only three verses, but oh, • what devastation they reflect

  6. 1Open your doors, Lebanon, so that fire • may devour your cedar forests.

  7. The invading Roman army is like a fire • that consumes the forests…

  8. Open your doors, Lebanon, so that fire • may devour your cedar forests. • 2Weep, you cypress trees, for all the ruined cedars; the most majestic ones have fallen. • Weep, you oaks of Bashan, for the • thick forests have been cut down.

  9. 3 Listen to the wailing of the shepherds…

  10. Jeremiah 25:34 • 34Weep and moan, you evil shepherds!Roll in the dust, you leaders of the flock! The time of your slaughter has arrived;you will fall and shatter like a fragile vase. • 35You will find no place to hide;    there will be no way to escape.

  11. 3 Listen to the wailing of the shepherds,    for their rich pastures are destroyed.Hear the young lions roaring, for their thickets in the Jordan Valley are ruined.

  12. 49 Caiaphas, who was high priest at that time, said, “You don’t know what you’re talking about! 50You don’t realize that it’s better for you that one man should die for the people than for the whole nation to be destroyed.” John 11:49-50

  13. Rejection of their Messiah resulted in • the Roman invasion, and • the destruction of their temple and city!!

  14. Wailing Shepherd • True Shepherd

  15. 4 This is what the Lord my God says: “Go and care for the flock that is intended for slaughter.

  16. 5The buyers slaughter their sheep without remorse. The sellers say, ‘Praise the Lord! Now I’m rich!’ Even the shepherds have no compassion for them.

  17. 6Likewise, I will no longer have pity on the people of the land,” says the Lord. “I will let them fall into each other’s hands and into the hands of their king. They will turn the land into a wilderness, and I will not rescue them.”

  18. 7 So I cared for the flock intended for slaughter—the flock that was oppressed (poor).

  19. Then I took two shepherd’s staffs and named one Favour (Beauty, Grace) and the other Union (Bands, Covenant). and I fed the flock.

  20. …two shepherd’s staffs…named… Grace and Covenant.

  21. 8 I got rid of their three evil shepherds in a single month. But I became impatient with these sheep, and they hated me, too.

  22. 9Then I said, “I will not feed you. Let what is dying die, and what is perishing perish. Let those that are left eat each other’s flesh.”

  23. 10 Then I took my staff called Favour and cut it in two, showing that I had revoked the covenant I had made with all the nations.

  24. 11 That was the end of my covenant with them. The suffering flock was watching me, and they knew that the Lord was speaking through my actions.

  25. 12 And I said to them, “If you like, give me my wages, whatever I am worth; but only if you want to.” So they counted out for my wages thirty pieces of silver.

  26. 13 And the LORD said to me, “Throw it to the potter”— this magnificent sum at which they valued Me! So I took the thirty coins and threw them to the potter in the Temple of the Lord.

  27. 3 Then Judas…was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4 saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.”

  28. 6 But the chief priests took the silver pieces and …consulted together and bought with them the potter’s field, to bury strangers in… Matthew 24:1-7

  29. 14 Then I took my other staff, Union, and cut it in two, showing that the bond of unity between Judah and Israel was broken.

  30. Wailing Shepherd • True Shepherd • False Shepherd

  31. 15 Then the Lord said to me, “Go again and play the part of a worthless shepherd.

  32. 16 This illustrates how I will give this nation a shepherd who will not care for those who are dying, nor look after the young, nor heal the injured, nor feed the healthy. Instead, this shepherd will eat the meat of the fattest sheep and tear off their hooves.”

  33. 17 “What sorrow [woe] awaits this worthless shepherd who abandons the flock! The sword will cut his arm [power] and pierce his right eye [mind]. His arm will become useless, and his right eye completely blind.”

  34. What Next? • ONLY Christ is the • Good Shepherd…

  35. What Next? • “He came unto His own, • but His own received Him not…” • John 1:11

  36. What Next? 12 Pilate answered and said to them again, “What then do you want me to do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?” Mark 15:12

  37. What Next? • “Away with him,” they yelled. • “Away with him! Crucify him!”

  38. What Next? • “We have no king but Caesar,” • the leading priests shouted back. • John 19:15

  39. What Next? • “…the Good Shepherd gives His life for the sheep.” • John 10:11

  40. What Next? Have you ever stopped to wonder What this life is all about? Why you’re here and where you’re going When your time on earth runs out?

  41. What Next? Maybe you’ve been far too busy, Trying hard to reach your goal; Would you let me ask you kindly, Have you thought about your soul?

  42. What Next? You may reach the highest portals, And your dreams may all come true; Wealth and fame may be your portion, And success may shine on you.

  43. What Next? All your friends may sing your praises, Not a care on you may roll; What about the great tomorrow – Have you thought about your soul?

  44. What Next? Don’t forget your days are numbered, Though you may be ridin’ high; But like all of us poor mortals, Someday you’ll just up and die.

  45. What Next? Your success and fame and glory Wont be worth the bell they toll; Let me ask you just one question, Have you thought about your soul?

  46. What Next? If you’ve never thought it over, Spend a little time today; There is nothin’ more important That will ever come your way.

  47. What Next? Then the joy of sins forgiven, And to know you’ve been made whole In the name of Christ the Saviour, Have you thought about your soul?

  48. “This do in remembrance of Me.”
