  1. Mathematics TEKS Connections Administrator Overview Grades 3-5

  2. What is the Mathematics TEKS Connections (MTC) Training? Part of the Texas Math Initiative • Also includes these trainings: • Teaching Mathematics TEKS through Technology (TMT3) • Mathematics TEKS Connections – Geometry (MTC-Geometry) • Maximizing Algebra II Performance (MAP) • Mathematics TEKS Refinements (MTR) • Texas State University System Mathematics for English Language Learners (TSUSMELL)

  3. MTC • The Mathematics TEKS Connections professional development provides participants with an opportunity to increase the depth of their understanding about the inherent connections within the TEKS. This professional development also provides an opportunity to explore instructional strategies that facilitate thinking needed to make the mathematical connections found in the TEKS. These content-based and instruction-based connections will be explored within and between grade levels and contents. The professional development includes:

  4. MTC • Tools to develop concepts and procedures supported by transitions from concrete understandings to abstract understandings • Connections between multiple representations to build and solidify student understanding of key concepts within a strand and across strands of the mathematics TEKS

  5. MTC • Targeted questioning strategies to facilitate modeling, organizing, and generalizing understandings related to real-world contexts • Classroom-ready lessons that utilize the 5E instructional model to address the conceptual development of selected mathematics TEKS for Grades K-8, Algebra I, Geometry, Mathematical Models with Applications, Algebra II, and Precalculus

  6. TMT3 The Teaching Mathematics TEKS through Technology Professional development is designed to provide teachers an opportunity to increase their depth of understanding about the judicious use of technology in the mathematics classroom. Expected learning outcomes for participants include an understanding of how technology can:

  7. TMT3 • Provide access to a deeper understanding of mathematical content; • Provide access to “real world” mathematical topics; • Improve the economy and efficiency of teaching mathematics TEKS relative to time; • Facilitate the use of various instructional tools in a mathematical setting.

  8. TMT3 The structure of the professional development is designed around the inquiry based 5E instructional model. This model has a strong foundation in research and has been shown to be highly effective in instructional settings.

  9. MAP Maximizing Algebra 2 Performance (MAP) uses a functions-based approach to the teaching and learning of the Algebra 2 TEKS. This professional development extends and enriches current instructional practice in order to facilitate robust learning for all students enrolled in Algebra 2. Content-based and instruction-based connections will be explored within a strand and between strands of the TEKS. The professional development includes:

  10. MAP • learning opportunities that promote conceptual understanding and procedural fluency related to functions outlined in the Algebra 2 TEKS • tools to connect multiple representations of parent functions to build and solidify student understanding of functions

  11. MAP • intentional questioning strategies to facilitate modeling, organizing, and generalizing understandings related to mathematical and real-world contexts • classroom-ready lessons that utilize the 5E instructional model to the Algebra 2 TEKS explored in the professional development

  12. MTC-Geometry • The modules will integrate appropriate technology to enhance student learning of geometry concepts. • The modules will focus on naturally integrating TEKS based algebra in the geometry curriculum where appropriate • The modules will focus on demonstrating how geometry TEKS can be integrated in multiple geometric situations

  13. MTC-Geometry • The modules will analyze results of the TAKS to focus on recognized weak areas in the geometry curriculum • The modules will focus on developing higher-level student thinking skills by using an investigative approach or real life applications.

  14. MTR The Mathematics TEKS Refinements Project examines the refinements made to the mathematics TEKS and explores their implication on instruction. Each professional development includes materials and facilitation strategies to examine the refinements to the mathematics TEKS, as well as student-ready lessons designed to facilitate the implementation of the refined mathematics TEKS.

  15. MTR Grades K-5 Professional Development: • Explores how to develop students’ numerical fluency • Explores how to develop students’ understanding of mass/weight and capacity/volume • Explores the use of performance assessments and rubrics as tools for effective assessment

  16. MTR Grades 6-8 Professional Development: • Explores how to develop students’ understanding of probability and statistics • Explores the use of performance assessments and rubrics as tools for effective assessment

  17. MTR Grades 9-12 Professional Development: • Explores how to develop students’ understanding of linear functions and quadratic functions • Explores how to develop students’ understanding of isometric and orthographic representations • Explores the use of performance assessments and rubrics as tools for effective assessment

  18. TSUSMELL The Texas State University System Mathematics for English Language Learners (TSUS MELL) project is a multiyear effort developing instructional resources designed to increase the effectiveness of mathematics instruction for ELL students in K-12 schools.

  19. TSUSMELL The TSUS MELL project focuses its activities in five areas: • Identifying and developing instructional tools • Creating professional development • Conducting applied classroom-based research

  20. TSUSMELL • Extending best practices to university-based preservice (teacher training) programs • Guiding policymakers
