  2. The Manhattan Project • The Manhattan Project was: • First official development of nuclear weapons by U.S. • It was headed and researched by J. Robert Oppenheimer • Testing took place in Hanford, Washington, Los Alamos, New Mexico, and Oak Ridge, Tennessee

  3. The Trinity Site • Three bombs were developed. One for testing and two for the war • Occurred July 16, 1945 • A Plutonium bomb was tested:(Nagasaki)

  4. Testing of the Bomb • Bomb was tested in Los Alamogordo, New Mexico • World’s first nuclear test • U.S. was assisted by England and Canada Not from the actual test at Trinity. Hiroshima

  5. The Enola Gay • Paul W. Tibbets Jr. - pilot of Enola Gay • B - 29 Bomber • Plane was used to drop first atomic bombs on Japan

  6. Hiroshima Attack • Took place on August 6, 1945 • First atomic bomb ever used in war • Bomb was called Little Boy • Bomb killed between 130,000 and 150,000 people

  7. Nagasaki Attack • Took place on August 9, 1945 • Targeted due to its Naval and shipyards • Kokura was first target, but cloud cover forced U.S. to choose Nagasaki • Bomb was called Fat Man

  8. Reason for dropping the Bombs • Stop massive loss of American life • To have the Japanese stop fighting • President Truman gave authority to drop the bombs

  9. Surrender of Japan • Japan surrendered on August 14, 1945 • Signed formal papers on USS Missouri • Atomic Bomb and Soviet Union caused Japan to surrender

  10. Conclusion • United States has been the only country to ever drop an atomic bomb • Worldwide effort to curb nuclear weapons • Was it necessary to drop the bomb? Nagasaki Peace Memorial
