Define professionalism • Knowing legal and ethical implications for OOSH service and working within these • Code of Professional Conduct • Understanding and working with policies and procedures of service • Personal values/beliefs vs professional values and beliefs • List personal and profession attributes of an OOSH worker • Which of these attributes will impact on the recreation program you develop

  3. Your role How does professionalism affect the program you develop? • Role Model • Team worker • Knowing the children in your care – Interests, Skills, Needs, development • Interacting with others – children/ families/ co-workers/ management • Research and further training

  4. Your role as a student Consider these scenarios • A parent approaches you at the end of the day. She is concerned about the “Melbourne Cup” activity planned for the following Tuesday. How do you respond? • A child at the service makes the comment that “All African people are black”. What would you do?

  5. OOSH as a learning environment for children • How do children learn? • How do children develop skills? • Does the philosophy of the service identify OOSH as learning environment? • What do the standards and QIAS say about this?

  6. Workplace performance and reflection • Self reflection – eg. could I have presented the experience differently? • Were my interactions during the experience appropriate? • Will the program support the philosophy and programming policies and procedures of the service? - thereby meeting the expectations and ethical guidelines of the community • Seek feedback from workplace supervisor – before and after implementing the program • Daily journals, evaluating program, personal / profession reflective journals • Are you a student or worker of the service? Will this affect your workplace performance in developing a recreation program? NB: this is about evaluating your workplace performance in developing the program – later we will look at “Evaluation of the program”
