  6. Searchable databases via WorldLII (2005-2012)

  7. WorldLII content WorldLII, AsianLII and CommonLII are both meta-systems but also contain their own collections CommonLII has significant general common law content (eg, the English Reports) as well as content for other commonwealth / common law countries not covered by an LII (eg Caribbean) AsianLII had content for a number of Asian countries currently with no LII

  9. Comparative legal research The most straight-forward and obvious use for WorldLII is comparative legal research Examples …

  10. Other WorldLII Roles … Apart from being a system in its own right, WorldLII performs a number of other functions. For example, disaster recovery (DR) and backup …

  11. Data consolidation and sharing– LawCite LawCite is a free access legal citator built by data mining WorldLII content Currently has records for over 4.4 million cases and journal articles Examples …

  12. Policy - Neutral citation • First introduced in 1995 • Now used by over 1,000 courts and tribunals around the world • Significance of neutral citations • Media neutral • Vendor neutral • Immediately available upon release of a decision • Expansion to include other types of documents including journal articles and treaties

  13. Future work Authenticity and authority Current ARC funded project 'Guiding Principles' on State obligations concerning free access to legal information developed by an expert group convened by the Hague Conference on Private International Law in October 2008, and the 'Law.Gov principles' for 'the dissemination of primary legal materials in the United States' developed in 2010 by Public Resources.org.

  14. Conclusions WorldLII remains relevant as an interface for international and comparative legal research It is however possible more important for the ways in which it provides a vehicle for international cooperation and collaboration and for its “side effects”. Future significance is possibly as a demonstration / tool to promote policy change (such as in relation to authenticity and authority).
