  1. Practical Work for Learning Woodlice habitats

  2. Learning outcomes • Recall the habitats in which woodlice are found • Collect evidence to investigate claims about woodlouse behaviour • Describe their degree of confidence in the claim by commenting on the reliability of the data and relevance of the data to the claim • Describe woodlouse behaviour that results in their being found in damp dark places

  3. Claim A Woodlice must spend time in damp, dark places in order to survive, because they lose moisture from their bodies.

  4. Discuss the claim • Do you agree with the claim? • What evidence have you seen that supports it? • What evidence would show it was wrong? • Do you have enough evidence? • What additional evidence might support or oppose this claim?

  5. Claim B Woodlice will settle in brightly-lit areas as long as the air around them is damp. If conditions change, woodlice tend to move to a new, more suitable place because they move around more in dry conditions and slow down when they reach a damper area. Claim C

  6. Argument • We agree with this claim because... • The evidence we have is... or • We disagree with this claim because... • The evidence we have is... • The extra evidence we would need would be...

  7. Assessing learning • What do you need to argue a claim successfully? • How would you argue against someone else’s claim?
