  1. Of Mice and Men Pre-Reading – Steinbeck Himself

  2. Early Life • John Steinbeck was born in Salinas Valley, California, February 27, 1902. • He was raised in modest holdings by his father who struggled to support his family by trying many odd jobs and by his mother who was a school teacher. • He had three sisters.

  3. His Raising • Growing up Steinbeck was a shy and intelligent child. • He developed an affinity for the land (Salinas Valley in particular) at a young age. • At the age of fourteen he took to writing, locking himself in his room for hours writing poetry and stories. • Worked on several ranches (sometimes with migrant workers)

  4. Young Adulthood • He attended Stanford university intermittently between 1919 and 1925. He left without a degree. Saying he was only destined to be a writer, nothing else. • After he left Stanford he attempted to be a freelance writer for several years. He failed. • He used these years of experience as a brindle stiff (hobo) as inspiration for various books.

  5. Of Mice and Men • Of Mice and Men was written by John Steinbeck in 1937. • It was set in the 1930’s to showcase the great depression, and the struggles of the people of the time.

  6. In Relation to Himself (known) • The novel was set in Salinas Valley California, where John Steinbeck himself was raised. • It was set in the time period in which he lived. • He worked on a ranch with migrant workers, which is essentially the setting for “Of Mice and Men”.

  7. In Relation to Himself (Predictions) • He was a hobo, so it is likely wanderers or people who are not in one place for an extended period of time could feature in the novel. • He worked as a freelance reporter so it is extremely likely that some of the events in the novel could be based on experiences he witnessed during this time. • He didn’t finish school himself so it is possible that a lack of education could be a prominent theme within the novel.
