  1. Orientation for Parents and Having a Little Fun in Class!! Ideas for getting parents involved and educated and keeping the students engaged. Greg Mangan Drive 4 Life Academy, Inc. ADTSEA, Sacramento, July 19, 2017

  2. ORIENTATION SETS THE TONE! • Engage the parents. • Give them the AAA Driver Improvement Program Driving Quiz. Then, invite them to stay for the class when they fail the test!! • Reward them with Tootsie Roll pops…get really good at long throws!!

  3. ORIENTATION SETS THE TONE • MAKE SURE PARENTS UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS THEIR JOB…YOU’RE NOT A MIRACLE WORKER!! • THEY MUST SET A GOOD EXAMPLE, BUT SADLY IT’S ACTUALLY TOO LATE TO START. • IS THE TEEN READY? THEY SHOULD KNOW! • KEEP A DRIVING LOG!! KEEP A DRIVING LOG!! • DON’T JUST DRIVE, PRACTICE! • MAKE SURE THEY KNOW WE’RE PARTNERS IN KEEPING THEIR TEEN SAFE!

  4. ORIENTATION SETS THE TONE • COMMUNICATE WITH PARENTS AFTER EVERY BEHIND THE WHEEL SESSION • TEACHER PRESENTS STUDENTS AND PARENTS A WRITTEN EVALUATION AFTER EACH BEHIND THE WHEEL SESSION • PRESENT THEM WITH A PARENT / TEEN DRIVING AGREEMENT. MAKE YOUR OWN OR USE ONE OF MANY AVAILABLE.

  5. KEEP STUDENTS ENGAGED AND ENTERTAINED! • YOU are a performer…YOU are on stage and you MUST be “ON” every moment of every class. • Think “DISNEY”…the performers are always on…and who doesn’t love DISNEY?

  6. KNOW YOUR STUDENTS! • Tell the students about you…try to keep it brief…not every detail of your life. • Each student should introduce themselves and tell the others their name, school, grade, and what their interests are. • USE this information to form a bond with students…make them know YOU CARE!!! • Ask them questions…get excited about the things THEY like to do!!

  7. IT’S TIME FOR A ROAD TRIP!! • EVERYONE GOES OUTSIDE FOR A BRAKING DISTANCE EXERCISE! • 60 MPH TO ZERO…THAT IS THE MISSION! • DRIVING A BRAND NEW…WHAT???? • WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR DOG SITTING IN THE FRONT SEAT??? • HOW FAST? WHAT KIND OF CAR? • WHAT ARE WE TRYING TO DO?????

  8. ROAD TRIP, con’t. • THE RESULTS WILL AMAZE YOU! SOME WILL GO OUT ABOUT 6 FEET!!! MOST WILL ONLY WALK ABOUT 30 TO 40 FEET! • I’LL EXPLAIN WHAT TO DO ONCE THEY ARE ALL STRUNG OUT ALONG YOUR PATH!! • MAKE SURE THEY ARE DRESSED APPROPRIATELY, YOU DON’T WANT ANY FROSTBITE!!

  9. FOLLOWING DISTANCE???? • Ask them what they’ve heard!! • Answers: 1 car length, 10 feet, three car lengths, one car length for every 10 MPH, etc. • Talk about the reality of stopping distance and relationship with following distance • Watch traffic going by and count distance between cars. • Is the state rule of “two seconds” enough??? • What are the downsides of being too close???

  10. Following distance, con’t. • Work up examples for them…make them do a little math…their math teachers may or may not like you for this!!! • How long will it take to go the 180 miles to Nashville at exactly 60 MPH? • Are the any downsides to the four second rule?? • Do some following distance exercises (we’ll go ahead and do one now).

  11. THIS IS A CAR! • ASK FOR A VOLUNTEER TO OPEN THE HOOD (I USUALLY ASK FOR A GIRL VOLUNTEER) • IT’S SO EASY A BLIND DRIVER CAN DO IT!! EYES CLOSED…LEFT HAND ON DASH, TURN HAND OVER…MOVE IT DOWN, DOWN, DOWN UNTIL IT RUNS OUT OF DASH…START PULLING! HOOD IS OPENED OR PARKING BRAKE IS RELEASED! • THEN OF COURSE, THEY STILL HAVE TO FIND THE SECONDARY LATCH AT THE HOOD!

  12. This is a car, cont’d. • LETS’S FIND OUT WHAT’S GOING ON UNDER HERE. • PICK STUDENTS TO FIND NECESSARY COMPONENTS…DIPSTICKS, OIL FILLERS, BRAKE FLUID, POWER STEERING FLUID, WASHER FLUID, BATTERY AND AIR FILTER. CHECK FLUID LEVEL AND EXPLAIN COLORS. • GET A GIRL TO CHANGE THE AIR FILTER…THEY ARE AMAZED WHEN THEY SEE HOW SIMPLE IT REALLY IS!!

  13. This is a car, con’t. • Tires? How many? WRONG!!! 5! Spare!! • What in the world is this? • We’re in “MERICA”…we use PSI, not kpa, etc. • How much air in tires? Where is that info?? • Tires…sure, look there. WRONG!! • Get volunteer to check air pressure. • Finally, let everyone know that the info is inside the driver’s door jamb or on the door…most cars…some it’s hidden!!

  14. TWO NEW WORDS!! • What does accelerate mean??

  15. TWO NEW WORDS!! • What does decelerate mean??

  16. TWO NEW WORDS!! • CELERATE • Not going faster, and not slowing down, just maintaining the current speed!! (thanks to the late Denise McCluggage)

  17. TWO NEW WORDS!! • Let’s make sure our teens understand that they MUST brake to the proper speed before starting their turn, then… “CELERATE” through the turn!!

  18. TWO NEW WORDS!! • How can drivers maximize traction? • How can drivers prevent skidding?

  19. TWO NEW WORDS!! TO AVOID SKIDDING AND TO MAXIMIZE TRACTION, DRIVERS MUST ALWAYS… BE…
