  5. Well Plats - General Requirements • All proposed surface disturbance must be surveyed and/or staked by a registered surveyor • Surveys, stakes, and flags show the orientation and extent of the operation

  6. Well Plats - Purpose • Ensures your well is actually on the lease or agreement • Depicts the measurements taken by a registered surveyor when locating the well and associated operations.

  7. Well Plats – Casual Use on SMA Lands • The casual use of the surface for surveying and staking is only allowed on BLM, FS, and other SMA lands • Must make access arrangements with SMA’s other than the BLM and the FS • No advance approval is required • It would be wise to call and inquire about any restrictions, prohibitions, closures, or approvals.

  8. Well Plats – Private Surface • Must make a good faith effort to notify the owner • Must make a good faith effort to obtain the appropriate access arrangements • Considered good operating practice

  9. Well Plats – Indian Lands • For Tribal and Allotted lands, you must notify the BIA to make access arrangements with the Indian surface owners • Indian lands that are not under government trust responsibility are treated as private surface
