  3. While folksonomy gives power to the people • Which means to collaboratively create tags, to annotate and categorize content. • So basically, folksonomy are: * freely chosen words * user generated, no restrictions

  4. What is Folksonomy? • This term was coined by Thomas Vander Wal in 2004. • It consisted of two words - folk - taxonomy = a classification in ordered categories (governed power)

  5. Where its applied today? • Almost every application today offers this facility, however some are well-known for this, such as: • flickr.com – photosharing can be done (explain) • Deli.cious – social bookmarking • Youtube – video sharing • Amazon.com – books can be tagged

  6. Why Folksonomy? • More and more information needs to be searched • Alternate methods have certain limitations • More information required, with least search • All information consists in different formats

  7. ..So what does it do? • It gives a meaning/metadata to our content • Generates communication about the content • Used to share knowledge concerning that content • Used to retrieve information whenever you go back

  8. How has Folksonomy been helpful? After the example done right now, what can we deduce about using this aid? • helps in giving meaning, as we know what we want • they associate to our information • searching becomes easier • they are rather easy to use and understand

Future Research People use folksonomies • to organize information, • investigate ways of evaluating their usefulness, • develop methods for capturing structures developed through folksonomies, and • examine folksonomies as a way of understanding a community’s conceptual model of a subject. New research should examine the how users organize information in a purely digital way

  11. Conclusion • The folksonomy presents a new opportunity for users to participate in the creation of classification systems. • Of particular interest are its application to categorizing content in developing fields, and allowing the navigation of content sets by browsing. • The social aspects and implications of these community-created systems are also of great significance and deserve exploration.
