  1. NOTEPACK: UNIT 2 – Matter and Change Conceptual Chemistry

  2. Unit 2 Objectives 1) Read and express information given in chemical formulas. 2) Classify matter as a pure substance or a mixture. 3) Distinguish between chemical and physical properties of matter, as well as chemical and physical changes. 4) Balancing chemical equations 5) Describing chemical reactions and calculate percent yield and percent error.

  3. Objective 1: Read and express information given in chemical formulas. • Today we will examine different types of pure matter and how to label those types of matter using chemical formulas.

  4. What is matter? • MATTER: Anything that has mass and takes up space.

  5. PURE SUBSTANCES: • PURE SUBSTANCES: Matter that has fixed composition and properties. • Cannot be broken down by physical methods.

  6. ELEMENTS: • ELEMENT: A substance that cannot be broken down by chemical means. • listed in the periodic table of elements  examples: iron (Fe), carbon (C), oxygen (O), nitrogen (N)

  7. COMPOUNDS: • COMPOUND: A substance made of 2 or more elements that are chemically combined.  examples: water (H2O), salt (NaCl), sugar (C12H22O11)

  8. COMPOUNDS: • Every compound is composed of the elements it contains.

  9. Chemical Formulas • CHEMICAL FORMULA: Shows the type and number of atoms present in a substance.

  10. Chemical Formulas • In the chemical formula, subscripts show how many atoms are in the compound. C6H10N2O2

  11. Chemical Formulas • The large numbers in front of the chemical formula, called coefficients, show the total number of particles / molecules. 3 C6H10N2O2

  12. OBJECTIVE 1 Practice Problems: How many atoms of each element are in the following? 1) CH4 2) AlCl3 3) 4 H2O 4) 10 Fe3P2 5) 6 Zn(NO3)2 6) Al2(SO3)3

  13. OBJECTIVE 1 Practice Problems: How many atoms of each element are in the following? 1) CH4: 1 carbon atom; 4 hydrogen atoms 2) AlCl3 3) 4 H2O 4) 10 Fe3P2 5) 6 Zn(NO3)2 6) Al2(SO3)3
