  3. Let’s Start with “The Cycle” • Day 1 is the first day of the period • Ovulation occurs around day 11-14 in a 28 day cycle • An ova is viable for 24-48 hours • Sperm can live up to 6 days in the uterus

  4. Nutrition • 400 micrograms of calcium daily • Cereals • Vitamins • Beans • Citrus fruits • Nuts • Dark green leafy veggies Folic Acid– “Folate” or Folic Acid • B vitamin • Prevents birth defects • Before becoming pregnant

  6. THE 1ST MONTH • And the winner is… YOU!! The first race you ever won!

  13. THE 3RD MONTH • Blood vessels form over the skull Now considered a fetus instead of an embryo

  14. THE 3RD MONTH • Substances can pass through the blood, many of which can be harmful to the baby.

  15. THE 4TH MONTH • Eyelids are formed • React to light changes • Distinct nose, lips, chin • Covered in lanugo (a downy hair) Genitalia distinctly male or female

  16. THE 4TH MONTH • Delicate skin shows the “bones” which are really soft cartilage The yolk sac will shrivel away as organs take over the job

  17. THE 4TH MONTH • Floating effortlessly receiving blood and all nutrients through the umbilical cord. Thin baby for now…

  18. THE 4TH MONTH • Lots of leg movement, but mother can’t feel it just yet. Umbilical cord twists

  19. THE 4TH MONTH • Eyebrows are already formed and hair on the baby’s body grows in distinct patterns.

  20. THE 5TH MONTH • Rapid brain growth • Can suck its thumb • Can hear • Sensitive to light changes

  21. THE 5TH MONTH • Ears grow from the inside out (9, 12, 18 wks)

  22. THE 5TH MONTH Strong sucking reflex Can startle “hamburger or hotdog?”

  23. THE 6TH MONTH • Thick, strong umbilical cord • Bones begin to harden • Lungs prepare to breathe

  24. THE 6TH MONTH • Waxy “vernix” protects the baby’s skin Amniotic fluid on baby’s eyebrows and lanugo Can open and close hands

  25. THE 6TH MONTH • 10 ½ inches • Could survive if born now (24 weeks)

  26. THE 7TH MONTH • Eyes open and react well to light by pupil dilation. Tastes sweet and sour and changes facial expressions

  27. THE 8TH MONTH • Rapid growth • Gets immunity to diseases Real hair grows Settling in the “down” position

  28. THE 8TH MONTH • Makes breathing movements to practice Hiccups Regular pattern of rest and exercise Hotdog?

  29. THE 9TH MONTH • Labor, cervical dilation and birth

  30. LABOR AND DELIVERY • Very hard work • Lots of risks involved in childbirth

  31. THE BRAND NEW INFANT • A baby’s first cry fills his lungs with air and blood now circulates through his lungs instead of the cord and placenta

  32. AFTER BEING BORN • Mis-shaped head • Wrinkly • Totally dependant

  38. Pregnant women should: • NOT eat hot dogs unless thoroughly cooked. • NOT eat soft cheeses such as feta,Brie,Camembert,blue-veined cheeses,Mexican style-”queso fresco” unless they have labels that clearly state they are made from pasteurized milk

  39. PREVENTION IS THE KEY!!! Hand wash properly and frequently.

  40. PREVENT FOODBORNE ILLNESS . . . • Separate raw, cooked foods • Hot foods hot, cold foods cold • Keep kitchen, dining area clean • When in doubt …toss it out!!!

  44. INFECTION • Increased pain, swelling, redness, heat, or tenderness around the tattoo or piercing site • Red streaks extending from the area • Pus coming from the wound • Swollen or tender lymph nodes • Fever
