  3. The geographic beginnings of Islam Click me • Islam begins on the Arabian Peninsula in 610 CE/AD • Islam is centered on the holy cities of Mecca and Medina • Other important cities include Damascus (in Modern Syria) and Jerusalem Location of Medina Location of Mecca

Mohammed the Prophet Click Here • Born in Mecca in 530 CE/AD • Purportedly visited by the Angel Gabriel and told to follow Allah (god) in 610 CE/AD • Flees from Mecca to Medina to avoid religious persecution in 622 CE/AD • Returns to Mecca and converts all citizens to Islam in 630 CE/AD • Dies in Jerusalem (ascended to heaven) in 632 CE/AD Mohammed receiving his first revelation from Gabriel

Islamic Religious Beliefs Click me • Islam is monotheistic with Allah (God) as its deity • Islam accepts earlier prophets like Abraham, Moses and Jesus and their revelations • Believers follow the Qur'an (Koran), which is viewed as God’s word to Muhammad • All people equal before God in Islam “Woe unto those who disbelieve Mohammed”

The Five Pillars of Islam Click me • Faith (Iman): “There is none worthy of worship except God and Muhammad is the messenger of God” • Prayer (Salah): obligatory prayers that are performed five times a day facing the Kaaba in Mecca • Alms to the Poor (Zakah): payment of a calculated amount of wealth to charity • Fasts during Ramadan (Swam): A one month fasting session from dawn to dusk to purify the soul • Pilgrimage to Mecca (Hajj): An obligation those who are fit for the trip
