  4. Amerigo Vespucci • Made several voyages to South America and the Caribbean • America’s name comes from/named after Amerigo’s first name • He was Italian

  5. Vasco Nunez de Balboa • Sailed to present-day Panama in Central America • Crossed mountains and jungles of Panama and reached the Pacific Ocean • 1513

  6. Ferdinand Magellan • Portuguese sailor and soldier • He sailed for Spain • He wanted to sail west and go around South America, cross the Pacific Ocean and end up in Spain

  7. Ferdinand Magellan • Magellan started his journey-1519 • Hit the Pacific Ocean 1520 • Named it Pacific Ocean which means “peaceful”

  8. Ferdinand Magellan • Magellan was killed in battle when he reached Philippine Islands • 1522- only one ship returned to Spain • First to circumnavigate the world • Proved Columbus’ theory
