  1. Grasslands Biome Ryan, Stephen, Jinkai

  2. Physical Characteristics (prairie) • Temperature • Hot summers and cool winters • Strong winds • Latitudes 50N-30N (creates extremes in temperature) • Almost no moderating affect from the ocean winds • Rainfall • Short grass • 12.6 inches avg. • Tall grass • 21.7 inches avg. • Rockies prevent from large amounts of rain • Types of organisms • Grazing animals, coyotes/foxes, hawks, owls, reptiles

  3. Physical Characteristics (Savannah) • Temperature • Warm temperature year round • 28°C from February to March and 16°C in December to January. • Rainfall • Less than 80mm (3in) between August and March • 350mm (14in) or more in June or July • Organisms • Shrubs, flat-leaved grasses, baobabs, acacia, lions, cobras, emus

  4. Physical Characteristics (Steppe) • Temperature • Cold winters • During spring, plants grow rapidly and the early summer begins the growing season. • Summers are hot • Climate is arid • Rainfall • Average: 350mm and 600mm (14 and 24in) • Long droughts • Organisms • Earthworms, ants, rodents, eagles

  5. Food Web Prairie • Producers – Green Plants • Primary Consumer – Grasshopper • Secondary Consumer – Snake • Carnivores – Hawk, Wolf, Fox, Owl

  6. Food Web Savannah • The Producers - the trees, shrubs and grass. • The Primary Consumers – the zebras and elephants. • The Secondary Consumers – the cheetah, hyena. • The Scavengers –  the termites, vultures and hyena. • The Decomposers or Detrivores – mushrooms, insects and microorganisms. • Carnivores – Lions, Hyenas, Cheetah, Serval

  7. Food Web Steppe Top Four Carnivores – Wolf, Lion, Hawks, Fox

  8. Human Impact Savannah • Cattle kept in one place because of human population have stripped the soil bare. • The problem of overgrazing by domestic livestock is on-going and needs to be addressed if more areas of savannah are not to be lost to scrubland.

  9. Human Impact Prairie • Dust Bowl- • Farming • Overgrazing

  10. Human Impact Steppe • 4000 Years Ago • Horses were domesticated. • Steppe became a highway for ideas. • The livestock of the steppe nomads did not harm the environment. • Modern • Humans have overgrazed the land and eroded the soil. Ex- Russia’s Virgin and Long Idle project.
