Who I am?

Dr. Elvira Perez, a doctoral researcher at Liverpool University, aims to study how sound mixtures are perceptually organized and how Auditory Scene Analysis can be used in speech recognition. The specific task involves investigating active/passive speech perception and replicating the effect of vowel formant manipulations on the perception of synthetic nasal consonants. The study also explores the mechanisms used to segregate noise from speech and the impact of regular and irregular noise on language production. Collaboration with the University of Sheffield and Helsinki University of Technology is expected to contribute towards finding perceptually guided principles for ASR system design and understanding active/passive processing in the brain.

Active\Passive speech perception • SHORTERM • Formant continuity and auditory speech analysis: • Replication of the effect of vowel formant manipulations on the perception of synthetic nasal consonants (Harding and Meyer, 2003) • Adding a variable: Noise prediction • Conditions: random\regular noise • Question: does predictable noise (chirp) produce percept that differs from unpredictable noise • Spanish subjects

  4. MID TERM • Study the active\passive mechanisms that we use to segregate noise from speech. • Psychoacustic experiments that measure speech intelligibility in noise. • And how interfering regular and irregular noise affect language production.

  5. Co-operation with the University of Sheffield ? Can we find perceptually guided principles for ASR system design? • And with the Helsinki University of Technology to study active/passive processing in the brain.
