Water Supply and Sanitation activities: extended approaches! • WatSan strategy • Disaster preparedness • Watsan for ERU-hospital • Training of delegates • Goals: • To become a competent and active PNS • To be prepared for WatSan tasks • To assess all available water sources • To optimize the use of available sources • To monitor the supply of water • For the benefit of the suffering population • in disaster relief and development. Koestler 03/06 Mexico 06.ppt
WatSan strategies: Provide tools and trained delegates Where are the people? Where is the water? What is the quantity and quality of water? What are the capacities needed and where? What are thewater quality improvement Measurs needed at each site? What is the most sustainable solution for each situation? What are costs and efforts to solve a situation? Etc??
Emergency Water Supply Modules • Identified needs: • More and better focus on water source (identification, protection, exploitation). • Improved monitoring of water supply both in terms of quality and quantity. • Methods and equipment to access surface-near water (shallow wells, springs, etc.). • Methods and equipment to access groundwater (drilling and equiping of boreholes). EmWatKit 4000 • Processes: • Straining • Pumping • Flocculation • Filtering • Absorption • Chlorination Processes
Available Modules: Water source identification module Water quality monitoring module Shallow well module Borehole drilling module • Water supply can be improved by different means: • Better use of available sources and resources • Use of alternative source • Better protection of springs, wells, inlets • Better monitoring of quantity and quality • Using simple ways to improve (storage, etc.) • Education in use and handling of water • Integrating hygiene, water and sanitation issues • Supporting functioning of water committees Koestler 08/04 EWmod present.ppt
Water Source Development Preparedness Mobilization Surveying Drilling/Digging Testing Well Development Pumping Well Head Water Distribution Interaction at any scale at any vulnerable point Involve community and authorities Support to find simple and appropriate solutions Document approaches and solutions Integrate into activities of other actors Koestler 08/04 EWmod present.ppt
Conclusions • Water Modules developed with the following focus: • High activity level in WatSan • Support goals of RCRC movement • Better integration of soft and hard components • Better focus on the effective and appropriate use of existing water sources. • Improved management of existing water resources. • Application of appropriate technology in water source protection and development. • Exploitation and use of groundwater as potential water source. • 4 components in the concept: • Trained staff for different tasks • Available suitable equipment • Compiled and available existing know-how • Accumulated and compiled experience
