  1. Case Work II Chapter 3 Attitudes and Behavior

  2. Attitudes and Behavior • A helper’s attitudes in the interview, which can be explicit or implicit, expressed or unexpressed, are his/her philosophy regarding both help and interviewing. • At best, the helping interview will provide the client a meaningful experience leading to change.

  3. Attitudes and Behavior (cont.) • The experience is the relationship with you, change is what we hope results from this relationship. 1.) What sort of change do we wish to help bring about? 2.) How can this best be accomplished?

  4. Type of Change Desired Bringing About Desired Change • Therapy addresses itself to change more than to any other goal. • Therapist and client examine the changes the latter wishes to introduce into his life, while the therapist attempts to enable the client to make this change possible.

  5. Type of Change Desired (cont.) Helping to Effect Change “Unconditional positive regard” (Rogers)

  6. Type of Change Desired(cont.) Playing a Vital Active Role • Benjamin – See the therapist as being active at all times. • The therapist is and acts as a genuine person. • Helping the other person to help themselves. • In the helping interview, the therapist brings knowledge, experience, professional skills, the information we possess, and the resources available.

  7. Demonstrating Respect Acceptance A Matter of Respect • Treating the client as an equal • Genuine liking – and disliking • Understanding (Three ways of understanding) 1.) Understand about him/her (i.e., read about them). 2.) Understand a person, not through the eyes of others, but through our own. 3.) Understand with another person. This is the most meaningful, but also the most demanding.

  8. Listening Listening: An Essential Tool • Understanding – Involve the use of an indispensable tool – listening. Listening and Understanding • Tuning in • Tuning out (See dialog – pp. 85-88) Suggested Goals in Listening see pp. 88-89

  9. Attitudes and Behavior Achieving Empathy • It means fooling yourself into or participating in, the inner world of another, while remaining yourself. (see pp. 93, 95-99) Our Own Behavior • How ought the therapist behave in the helping interview.

  10. Attitudes and Behavior Humanness the Essence • The interviewer ought to behave as a human being in the interview (see pp. 102-104). Friendships Lost and Gained • Therapy is education , paid for, friendship is never that. Professional and Personal Ethics • Benjamin believes that we should not hide our own values when these are relevant to our client’s guest.
