  6. Civil Engineering • One of the oldest and largest branches of engineering is civil engineering. Without civil engineers our society would not be the way it is today. Civil engineering involves structures such as buildings, bridges, tunnels, roads and railways. • Recall the Great Wall of China for example, it is considered one of civil engineering’s greatest accomplishments, stretching more than 6,000 miles long! The planning, designing, and supervision of construction of high-rise buildings, airports, water treatment centers, and sanitation plants is all done by civil engineers. Eventually, it will be civil engineers who make it possible for humans to live on Mars!Careers are available in the areas of government, consulting, construction, research, and education.

  25. Personal Course Journal In order to practice English writing and effective learning each student will write a personal journal that discusses what happened inside and outside the classroom. Students will be asked to hand in their progress during the semester for comments and grading. Journals have to be submitted three times during the semester for review by the instructor. At those dates, the journals will not be graded just reviewed in order to provide recommendations for improvements. If a journal is not handed in at the set dates, each time 10 (ten) points will be subtracted from the final grade.

  26. Personal Course Journal In order to get at least 7 Pts (C) for the journal it has to include following items: 1. Executive Summary 2. Table of Contents, 3. Weekly Review: Select a good title for the week and provide the date. 4. WHATwas covered during the week? WHAT happened in class? 5. Personal discussions: Reflections of the main topic of the week addressing following questions: • WHY? - (do you think) are the basic principles and methods covered in class important? • HOW? - does the class material relate to things you know already (i.e., other classes, newspaper, book, working in industry)? • WHAT? - are real-world problems that you can solve now? • WHAT? - was the best example that you found in book,  in class, or on the Internet  that helped you in better understanding the material?

  27. Personal Course Journal 6. Discussion of special questions: The coach will on occasion ask special questions during the semester.  7. 5 new English words of the week. Pick 5 words and find 5 synonyms for them. Discuss what the differences are between and how to use them properly. If a student would like to get additional points(more than 10 pts) more sections can be added such as: SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIAL: Personal observations, evaluations, questions and insights. Poems. Newspaper articles. PowerPoint. Web-site,....
