  1. New Age Careers for Kids – Yay or Nay? New age career choices are talk of the town today. It’s worth remembering that professions and occupations keep evolving through centuries. While there are certain well-paying jobs that exist today, they might not be as relevant tomorrow. And even if

  2. they do exist, they might evolve along the way due to the rapid advancements in technology. Emergence of these new age technologies such as robotics and artificial intelligence will surely have an impact on our children’s futures. However, it will be several years before we are truly able to understand how their careers will get impacted, whether these will create new opportunities or take away existing ones. The World Economic Forum (WEF) reported that over half of the world's youth will find themselves in jobs that have not yet been created, not very far away in the future. So, how do we ensure that our children are prepared for this journey of uncertainty? Respect the uniqueness of every child. Do not assume that the child is an extension of you. Careers that may interest them might not interest you. However, this does not imply that their choices or perceptions are incorrect. Instead, try to research their interest areas and guide them accordingly. Consider doing the following, 1. Make yourself aware about new age careers: there is plenty of useful information available online. Read about emerging trends and how certain careers will evolve over the next few years. Involve your children in the research so that they can make informed decisions. 2. Help your child discover themselves: Encourage your kids to introspect and do self-assessments to understand their strengths, likes and dislikes, passion etc. Investing in a career coach for this activity would certainly be helpful as they would act as a strong partner in the process and offer unique perspective. Allow brainstorming to help your child bring their innate strengths to a certain field. Some aptitude tests such as Myers- Briggs, strong Inventory and Holland Codes Tests might prove favourable to the children. 3. Tap into your network: Access your professional network and learn what is required to excel in a particular job with respect to skills required, trainings or qualifications. This might also involve indulging your kid into job shadowing for a while to enrich their perspective. You might also request your colleagues to communicate and guide your kids to bring in an external viewpoint. 4. Recollect and share your career story: Share your own career journey with your children to help them understand what to expect in real life scenarios. Share the highs and lows, map out your mentors and influences and take an example out of the entire experience to shape your child’s unique journey. While these things often seem straightforward at first viewing, a lot of parents often feel lost at how to go about doing the right things to bring this clarity. As such, parents should always be open to taking help from different platforms that offer career counselling
