  12. Depth & Light • So what do you know about light?

  13. Depth & Light • Can you name the parts of a light wave? Direction of wave ? http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Simple_wave.png

  14. Depth & Light • Can you name the parts of a light wave? Direction of wave crest http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Simple_wave.png

  15. Depth & Light • Can you name the parts of a light wave? Direction of wave ? http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Simple_wave.png

  16. Depth & Light • Can you name the parts of a light wave? Direction of wave trough http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Simple_wave.png

  17. Depth & Light • Can you name the parts of a light wave? Direction of wave ? http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Simple_wave.png

  18. Depth & Light • Can you name the parts of a light wave? Direction of wave amplitude http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Simple_wave.png

  19. Depth & Light • Can you name the parts of a light wave? Direction of wave ? http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Simple_wave.png

  20. Depth & Light • Can you name the parts of a light wave? Direction of wave wavelength http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Simple_wave.png

  21. Different wavelengths produce different colors. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Colors_and_wavelengths.png Depth & Light

  22. Sunlight, is white light. It has all wavelengths & colors. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Colors_and_wavelengths.png Depth & Light

  23. We can use a prism to separate colors by wavelength. Depth & Light http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Light_dispersion_conceptual_waves.gif

  24. What is the order? ROY G. BIV Depth & Light http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Light_dispersion_conceptual_waves.gif

  25. When light hits a material like water it is: Reflected, Absorbed, or transmitted. Depth & Light incident ray reflected absorbed transmitted

  26. What is the color of water? Depth & Light

  27. What is the color of water? BLUE Depth & Light

  28. What is the color of water? BLUE What happens when light passes through a blue material? Depth & Light

  29. What happens when light passes through a blue material? Every color but blue is absorbed Depth & Light Absorbed light transmitted light

  30. Depth & Light • So what happens to color at different depths of the ocean? • Materials : • black felt represents the aphotic zone • square felt pieces in assorted colors (ROY G.BV) • Blue plastic “goggles” to represent layers of water

  31. Depth & Light • PROCEDURE: • Place black felt with color pieces face-up. • Add one blue layer at a time in front of your eyes. • Put an “X” in the box for every color you can see.

  32. Depth & Light - (copy the table)

  33. RESULTS:What color (s) disappears with 1 layer? 2? 3?Is there any color which did not disappear?

  34. Depth & Light • Some color’s travel deeper, due to shorter wavelength. • Violet gets scattered by water. http://disc.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/education-and-outreach/additional/science-focus/ocean-color/oceanblue.shtml

  35. Depth & Light • How does that affect the organisms that live in the ocean?

  36. Depth & Light • PROCEDURE: • Have your partner randomly distribute pieces on the reverse side of the black felt. • (Don’t peek!) • Put on your goggles to simulate the Desphotic zone (3 layers).

  37. Depth & Light • PROCEDURE: • Grab the first 10 pieces you can see.(no feeling around!) • Record results. • Repeat for your partner. • Total your results.

  38. Depth & Light • PROCEDURE: (copy the table)

  39. Depth & Light • RESULTS? • So what were the easiest colors to find? • Which colors were rarely picked up?

  40. Time to show what you have learned.

  43. ORANGE? YELLOW? GREEN? BLUE? VIOLET? BROWN? What colors give animals in the ocean the best camouflage? RED? ?

  44. ORANGE? YELLOW? GREEN? BLUE? VIOLET? BROWN? What colors give animals in the ocean the best camouflage? RED? 1) Design your own camouflage pattern

  45. ORANGE? YELLOW? GREEN? BLUE? VIOLET? BROWN? What colors give animals in the ocean the best camouflage? RED? 2) Write a paragraph describing your camouflage pattern. Use data from your experiment to explain why you chose the colors in the pattern. 1) Use data from your experiments to design your own camouflage pattern
