  1. WMO World Meteorological OrganizationWorking together in weather, climate and water Site Classification C. Bruce Baker , NOAA Vice President of CIMO WMO; Name of department www.wmo.int

  2. Site Classification WMO • Experimental focus: • Quantify air temperature biases caused by proximity to artificial heating sources • Quantify air temperature biases associated with sensor type and radiation shielding • Air temperature measurements are made using both the NOAA US Climate Reference Network methodology and the National Weather Service Maximum Minimum Temperature Sensor system Site Classification 3

  3. Site Classification WMO Science Questons What are the differences in the measurement of temperature between the MMTS and the CRN systems as a function of solar radiation and wind speed for different siting classifications?? What are the differences in the measured temperatures between site classifications as a function of solar radiation and wind speed?? What is the magnitude of the local advection of heat and momentum for site classification of 5 vs 3?? Site Classification 1

  4. Site Classification WMO Siting Experiment Class 1: More than 100 m away from artificial heating sources, parking lots, roof tops... Class 2: More than 30 m away from artificial heating sources. Class 3: More than 10 m away from artificial heating sources. Class 4: Less than 10 m away from artificial heating sources. Class 5: on/near artificial heating sources. 2 Site Classification

  5. Site Classification WMO Site Classification 1
