Constitution of 1824 • March 19, 1823 – Mexican emperor Agustin de Iturbide is overthrown. • New government formed by federalists. • Opposed by the centralists • Mexico is divided into 19 states and 4 territories. • Former provinces of Coahuila and Texas combined. • Baron de Bastrop was chosen as the first representative from Texas

Colonization law of 1824 • No one could receive more than 48,708 acres of land. • No colony could be established within 10 leagues (30 miles) of the coast, or 20 leagues of an international boundary without permission. • Only those who intended to live permanently in Texas could receive land contracts.

  4. Colonization • New laws allowed for individual families to acquire land contracts directly from the Mexican government, but most American settlers continued to obtain land through empresarios. • Why?

  5. Empresario Contracts • Under the new laws, Empresarios received 23,000 acres for every 100 families they brought in. • Contracts ran for 6 years. • If an empresario could not bring in the minimum of 100 families by 6 years his contract would be canceled.

  6. Austin’s Success • Stephen F. Austin was the most successful empresario. • 1) Demonstrated the ability to deal successfully with Mexican authorities. • 2) His colonists had little difficulty getting title to their land and making improvements. • 3) Native Americans became less of a threat. • 4) Austin’s contracts included lands with some of the most fertile soil in Texas.

  7. Other Empresarios • Green DeWitt • 2nd most successful empresario • Founded the town of Gonzales • Martin de Leon • Brought Mexican settlers into Texas • Founded Victoria • James Power, James Heweston, John McMullen, James McGloin, Haden Edwards, David G. Burnet, and Lorenzo de Zavala.
