The Importance of Networking • Over80percent of job seekers indicate finding positions through networking instead of through advertised positions (newspaper, websites, etc). • In-person networking can include joining professional associations, meetings, conferences, and informational interviews. • Networking, though, has changed with the emergence of social media and technology in the last 5 to 10 years. • Now people can effectively network • Faster • Easier • And with more people. Effectively Marketing Yourself • The Essential Criteria to Establishing Your Brand • Use a version of your name as the basis for your username on social media and technology sites. • Develop a profile with content related to your experience, background, and goals. (Think of this profile as your social media two-minute presentation) • Google yourself frequently to maintain awareness of your brand. • Control your brand by ensuring your privacy settings are appropriate and the information you are posting reflects your most professional self. Facebook • Why is this site important to use? • 58 percent of Fortune 500 companies have company profiles on Facebook. • The average number of Facebook pages managed by FG100 companies more than tripled in the previous year, from 1.2 pages in 2010 to 4.2 in 2011. • 901 million monthly active users at the end of March 2012. • 526 million daily active users on average in March 2012. • It’s the most popular social media site in the world. • What are Tips for Job Seekers? • Have a professional picture as your profile picture. • Ensure your profile includes your education, qualifications, career interests, etc. • Check to see if you have been “tagged” in recent pictures. • Like company pages and job search via Facebook. • Frequently check your privacy settings. (Employers check candidates’ Facebook pages, so continue to ensure your page is marketing your best self) Status Update: Steps to create an account on any of these examples sites are highlighted in your booklets.

  10. Twitter • What is Twitter and • why is this site important to use? • Twitter is a social networking site whereby subscribers post “tweets” of up to 140 characters. (Short, concise, and to the point). • Users can group posts together by topic or type by use of hashtags – words or phrases prefixed with a “#.” • For example, one of the most popular and effective job seeker hashtags is #jobs. • 77 percent of Fortune 100 companies used Twitter in 2011. • Twitter has gained worldwide popularity, with over 140 million active users as of 2012. • Twitter is a great networking site to follow individuals with similar career interests. • What are Tips for Job Seekers? • Have a professional picture as your profile picture. • Ensure your profile includes your education, qualifications, career interests, etc. • Follow industry leaders and relevant contacts in your desired career field. • Follow employers/companies who use Twitter. • Join relevant job seeker chats, including #JobHuntChat and #careerchat. Both of these chats have weekly live chats for job seekers.

LinkedIn • What is LinkedIn and • why is this site important to use? • LinkedIn is a social networking site specifically for making and sustaining professional connections. • As of March 31, 2012, LinkedIn operates the world’s largest professional network on the Internet with 161 million members in over 200 countries and territories. • As of March 31, 2012, LinkedIn counts executives from all 2011 Fortune 500 companies as members; its corporate hiring solutions are used by 82 of the Fortune 100 companies. • More than 2 million companies have LinkedIn Company Pages. • What are Tips for Job Seekers? • Take advantage of the recommendation feature of this site, which is terrific. • Ensure your profile is up-to-date in terms of qualifications, experiences, and recommendations. • Print business cards that include your LinkedIn page. • Include the LinkedIn address on your resume. • Search company pages to find opportunities.

Google Sites & WordPress:Career Portfolio Options • What are Google Sites and WordPress and why are they important ? • Google Sites and WordPress are both websites you can use to create a free career portfolio without having to possess any web development skills. • These sites are a great and creative way to market your qualifications and experiences to potential employers. • WordPress has over 350 million people view more than 2.5 billion pages each month. • WordPress users produce about 500,000 new posts and 400,000 new comments on an average day. • What are Tips for Job Seekers? • Store or link to your resume, references, and work samples. • Organize your portfolio in a user-friendly and easy to navigate layout. • Ask friends or relatives to review your portfolio to ensure easy navigation and no typographical errors. • Ensure your webpage is up-to-date and includes all of your relevant professional information. • Print business cards that include a link to your career portfolio and include the link on your resume. • Ensure that your address and personal information is password protected. • Do not include any personal information (such as your Social Security Number)

  15. Career Portfolio Example Note: Make sure your site is password protected Make the site a version of your name. Add pages with content to market yourself. Introduce your portfolio. You can also post updates related to your career interests and expertise.

QR Codes • What is a QR Code? • A QR Code is a 2-dimensional bar code that contains a set of data (text, numbers, or a hyperlink). • The code can be read by a QR reader, which are available as free app downloads for any smartphone. • They can be found on countless products now and are great for marketing a website or additional information. • What are Tips for Job Seekers? • Create a free QR Code in seconds at: • http://qrcode.kaywa.com • http://delivr.com/qr-code-generator • Include your QR Code on your resume and business card and link it to your career portfolio. • Remember, your career portfolio can highlight additional documents, including research, recommendations, and presentations-content in addition to the resume.
