  1. 13th September 2018 SEPTEMBER NEWS Welcome to our latest newsletter! As the Autumn season arrives we share some staff news and explore the risk of being investigated by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC). IT'S ALL CHANGE AT CHARTERHOUSE At Charterhouse we ‘Aim Higher’ and this ethos carries through to all of our staff as well. We have always been keen to reward our staff for their work ethic and achievements and from 1 August 2018 we are delighted to announce that Phil Dickinson (pictured) has been appointed a Director with Neil Rabey becoming Head of Finance and Chiraag Shah, Prashant Chauhan and Shivam Shah being promoted to Senior Tax Consultant, Client Manager and Accounts Senior respectively.

  2. We are constantly recruiting for staff and we are sure that as we continue to ‘Aim Higher’ existing and new staff will all follow our lead. THE RISK OF BEING INVESTIGATED BY HMRC HMRC is now employing business intelligence technology to help identify evasion and fraud, as well as using the technology for risk profiling and selection of cases for investigation. This is intended to help them increase their revenue yield. HMRC is at liberty to investigate individuals, sole-traders, small businesses and corporates. According to reports HMRC’s Fraud Investigation Service (FIS) has collected £5.47bn so far in 2018. The figure represents a 7% increase on last year and follows political pressure to increase the number of successful tax prosecutions in both the UK and abroad. In July of this year, HMRC published a consultation document, focusing on changes that could simplify the process of accessing taxpayer information through third parties, such as accountants, retailers, and social media platforms. No-one can predict who will be investigated. It is true that you can introduce enquiring eyes if you make regular mistakes on your returns or submit data that could be indicative of rule-bending or fraud (numbers fluctuating by large margins, several years of unprofitability, directors being paid less than employees) but there is a random factor too. Every year HMRC randomly selects a huge number of businesses and individuals for review and investigation. You can employ the best professionals (auditors, accountants, tax advisors and bookkeepers) and yet HMRC can still select you or your business for investigation. Your risk of being investigated is greater than ever. IMPACT UPON YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS Tax investigations are time consuming, can last for a considerable time (average of 16 months) and cost thousands of pounds. When dealing with HMRC professional representation is essential in order to deal with HMRC in a timely and robust manner. It is equally beneficial to have professional help because early intervention can lead to early resolution and additional tax due can be avoided or mitigated.
