  3. Sexuality What needs to be more censored? Effects In Media • SEX SELLS • Used in all forms of media • Sometimes partially blurred/cut out because of laws, but government can’t agree on what ‘too sexual’ is • Ex. Half-naked models, sexual innuendos, sexual acts • Increase in adolescent intercourse which causes STD’s and unwanted pregnancies; shows them it’s normal and cool but does not show effects • Decrease in self-esteem because the objects of desire are a specific prototype; image altering • This can cause eating disorders and tons of plastic surgery because want to feel accepted

  9. Arguments of both sides In Favor of Censorship Opposed to Censorship More than half of Americans feel media should have MORE freedom Individuals choice to what they expose themselves to People can’t decide what is appropriate for others Violates First Amendment: Freedom of Speech & Press This prohibits government from creating laws to go against freedom and censorship (of the FCC) breaks this law • 22% feel media should have less freedom • Corrupts ideas, morals, and behaviors of people • Media needs more control to shed positive influences over people • Creates negative effects (listed)
