  2. 2 3 9 TOEFL Reading ▶Reading Comprehension Eclipse An eclipse refers to an astronomical event that occurs when one celestial object moves into the shadow of another. It is mostly used to describe either a solar eclipse or a lunar eclipse. The solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun. The Sun and the Moon are in conjunction as seen from the Earth and the Earth’s view of the Sun is obscured totally or partially. A total solar eclipse occurs very rarely and the Sun is completely obscured by the Moon. Many people around the world try to observe this supernatural phenomenon. In ancient times, total solar eclipses frightened people as the Sun seems to disappear with the sky getting dark in the middle of the daytime. Some Asian nations such as China, Japan, India and Nepal witnessed a total eclipse on July 22, 2009. Lasting a maximum of six minutes, it was the longest total solar eclipse in the 21st century. On the other hand, a partial eclipse occurs when the Sun and the Moon are not exactly in line, with the Moon only partially obscuring the Sun. An annular eclipse occurs when the Sun and the Moon are exactly in line, but the Sun appears like a ring, with its bright light surrounding the outside of the Moon. Viewing the Sun during solar eclipses requires special methods such as using proper solar filters to protect the eyes from the harmful part of the Sun’s radiation. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes behind the Earth and the Earth blocks the Sun’s illumination from hitting the Moon. This happens when the Sun, the Earth and the Moon are exactly aligned, with the Earth placed in the middle. Unlike a solar eclipse that can be viewed from only some small parts of the world, a lunar eclipse may be viewed from any part of the world on the night side of the Earth. In history, Christopher Columbus successfully intimidated the natives to help him and his men by correctly predicting a lunar eclipse for February 29, 1504. ☞ Choose the best answer based on the article.
