Stopping Distances There is no formula, but is based on several factors: • Individual reaction time • Weather and road conditions • Vehicle weight • Brake conditions • Condition and type of tires • Roadway conditions • Speed • Never Drink…
Stopping Distances • Examples from chart on page 24: If you are traveling at 30 mph It will take you 33 feet before you can react To come to a complete stop will be another 55 feet. So, it will be a total of 88 feet minimum to come to a complete stop if you are going at 30 MPH When driving at 60mph, it will take you 300 feet to come to a complete stop.!!!!!! 5 K Difference
Proper Braking • Do not violently push or slam on brake!! (cause vehicle to jerk and wears out brakes and tires prematurely) • Apply Gentle pressure to the brake and always use RIGHT foot for the brake • With Anti-Lock-Brakes, do not pump the brake (It could cause you go to out of control)
Driver Signals • Signal 100 feet before a turn • Know correct hand signals! Left arm straight out = left turn Left arm pointed up = right turn Left arm pointed down = STOP (Another signal to use is the horn when passing, but not in a residential or business district)
Driving in Reverse • Steering the wheel to the right moves the car to the right • Steering the wheel to the left moves the car to the left Place RIGHT hand and arm behind passenger seat when turning!!
Driving in Reverse (Continued) • When driving in reverse, front of car swings in opposite direction!! • Do not depend on mirrors alone!!
Parking on a hill • 1. Parking on a hill facing downhill, TURN WHEEL TOWARDS CURB • 2. Parking on a hill facing uphill TURN WHEEL AWAY FROM CURB
Angle Parking – Pulling in • Watch traffic ahead and behind • Signal and slowdown • Make sure car will clear any parked car • Steer into space and straighten wheel • Parking Video
Angle Parking – Backing out • Make sure no one is behind • Back up slowly • Stop and look over cars parked next to you • Back until left front wheel passes rear bumper of car parked to your left • Straighten wheel and enter traffic
Parallel Parking – (Most common form of city parking) • Pull along side, or parallel, about 2-4 feet to car parked in front of space you want. • Make sure there are no obstructions then • When front of car has cleared rear bumper or parked car in front, Stop! • Turn steering wheel all the way to right and begin backing slowly • Make sure to clear back bumper of car in front. • When car is in line, stop straighten wheel and pull forward. • You must be no more than 6 inches from curb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
