  2. Seat Belt Law • WHO MUST WEAR SEATBELTS: • All occupants Front Seat = Primary offense • Back Seat = Secondary Offense • RESPONSIBILITIES: • For passengers under 18 – driver • For passengers over 18- themselves • Permit Holder or Probationary License Holder is responsible for Anyone and Everyone in their car! • Embrace Life

  3. Benefits of Seatbelts: • Improves your chance of surviving a crash by 60% • Keep passengers from being thrown from car in a collision • Prevent passengers from hitting dashboard or windshield in a collision – and slows body down after a collision. (Hitting dashboard at 30mph is like falling off top of a 3 story building) • Keep passengers and Drivers from sliding on the seat during stops and turns • What killed Richard…

  4. Car Seats: • Child car safety seats should be placed in back seat. • If not back seat, place in front, but move front seat far away from dashboard • Children 12 and under should ride in the back seat of a vehicle

  5. Car Seats (cont.) Never place a rear-facing infant safety seat in the front seat of a vehicle that has a passenger airbag. • An infant seat should not face forward.

  6. Child Restraint Law • Children 8 years or younger, who weigh less than 80 lbs must be buckled into an approved car or booster seat. • Children under 8 but over 80lbs Must be in a rear seat but use a Seat belt at all times

  7. Airbags save lives!!!!!! -Almost all cars have them now -Combined with seatbelts, they greatly reduce the risk of death from auto accidents

  8. Car Condition: • Check these before driving: • Reverse lights • Brakes – You should be able to stop within 25feet at 20 mph. Do not pump Anti-Lock Brakes!! • Brake Lights • Headlights • The Horn • Taillights • Tires • Turn Signals • The Windshield

  9. Starting a Parked Car • Check behind and in front of car • Make windows are clean, and line of sight is clear • Adjust seat to your size • Adjust mirrors to reduce blind spots • Fasten seatbelts • Make sure car is in park, or neutral gear`

  10. Starting a Parked Car (cont.) Tips: • Keep good posture • 95% of all information necessary for safe driving is visual information • Check blindspots and for less conspicuous vehicles such as bicycles or motorcycles

  11. Steering • Keep car in center of lane • Keep to right of a two-lane road with oncoming traffic in the other lane

  12. Steering • When driving in curve, your vehicle tends to go STRAIGHT. 9 3 • Keep proper grip on wheel and turn accordingly • Hands should be at 9 and 3 o’clock.

  13. Stopping Distances There is no formula, but is based on several factors: • Individual reaction time • Weather and road conditions • Vehicle weight • Brake conditions • Condition and type of tires • Roadway conditions • Speed • Never Drink…

  14. Stopping Distances • Examples from chart on page 24: If you are traveling at 30 mph It will take you 33 feet before you can react To come to a complete stop will be another 55 feet. So, it will be a total of 88 feet minimum to come to a complete stop if you are going at 30 MPH When driving at 60mph, it will take you 300 feet to come to a complete stop.!!!!!! 5 K Difference

  15. Proper Braking • Do not violently push or slam on brake!! (cause vehicle to jerk and wears out brakes and tires prematurely) • Apply Gentle pressure to the brake and always use RIGHT foot for the brake • With Anti-Lock-Brakes, do not pump the brake (It could cause you go to out of control)

  16. Driver Signals • Signal 100 feet before a turn • Know correct hand signals! Left arm straight out = left turn Left arm pointed up = right turn Left arm pointed down = STOP (Another signal to use is the horn when passing, but not in a residential or business district)

  17. Driving in Reverse • Steering the wheel to the right moves the car to the right • Steering the wheel to the left moves the car to the left Place RIGHT hand and arm behind passenger seat when turning!!

  18. Driving in Reverse (Continued) • When driving in reverse, front of car swings in opposite direction!! • Do not depend on mirrors alone!!

  19. Parking on a hill • 1. Parking on a hill facing downhill, TURN WHEEL TOWARDS CURB • 2. Parking on a hill facing uphill TURN WHEEL AWAY FROM CURB

  20. Angle Parking – Pulling in • Watch traffic ahead and behind • Signal and slowdown • Make sure car will clear any parked car • Steer into space and straighten wheel • Parking Video

  21. Angle Parking – Backing out • Make sure no one is behind • Back up slowly • Stop and look over cars parked next to you • Back until left front wheel passes rear bumper of car parked to your left • Straighten wheel and enter traffic

  22. Parallel Parking – (Most common form of city parking) • Pull along side, or parallel, about 2-4 feet to car parked in front of space you want. • Make sure there are no obstructions then • When front of car has cleared rear bumper or parked car in front, Stop! • Turn steering wheel all the way to right and begin backing slowly • Make sure to clear back bumper of car in front. • When car is in line, stop straighten wheel and pull forward. • You must be no more than 6 inches from curb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
