  7. iCity – A New Model for Local ServicesiCity Lab has Identified some Global Mega Trends • Urbanisation from 2.6 billion to 6.3 billion (year 2011 to 2050, UN data 2011) Economic shifts in the global market affecting Business, Jobs and Infrastructure. • Aging Population with increasing life expectancy, medical science advancement and low fertility across the world. The proportion of the population above 60 years will grow from 11% to 22% (2009 to 2050, UN, 2009) • Chronic disease management is now under stress despite medical advances and affluent lifestyles. Chronic diseases kill nearly 35 million people each year, including almost 9 million before the age of 60 (2010). “ Tackling these diseases constitutes one of the major challenges for sustainable development in the twenty-first century." (WHO Assistant Director-General Dr Ala Alwan, 2010) We believe technology can help in providing answers that will help address these Mega Trends

Public services are unlikely to be delivered directly by the responsible body, rather commissioned through an electronic marketplace from local or specialist providers in the world market The Private Citizen will be Informed, knowledgeable and discerning; they expect 24/7 availability of everything. They are extensively connected to the world through the internet, utilise cloud enabled software and have broad personal networks access to social media The Citizen Customer will expect to be empowered to make individual decisions about how they receive state support and services, where they procure those services and how much they are prepared to invest of their personalised budget in order to receive them Members and Officers will interact in a digitally enabled way, providing governance and oversight for the council services, using real time information to evaluate the performance of local services with reduced time taken for local decision making and greater access to citizens
