  2. Power/Loss of Power • “The conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist.” pg. 181 chapter 11 This is the moment when Ralph and Piggy lost all power and Jack gains it all.

  3. Society vs. Savagery • “Which is better-to have rules and agree, or to hunt and kill?” pg 180 chapter 11 Trying to set common goals for the society. • “Well, we won’t be painted,” said Ralph, “because we aren’t savages.” pg 172 chapter 11 Ralph and Piggy are still together as a society while Jack and his tribe have lost touch with reality and are savages. • “No. They’re not as bad as that. It was an accident” pg 184 chapter 12. Ralph was in denial that Jack and his tribe had the intent to kill Simon and Piggy, and that they weren’t actually going insane.

  4. Loss of Identity • “Savages appeared, painting out of recognition, edging round the ledge toward the neck.” pg 175 chapter 11 The painted faces show a loss of identity. • “’Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!’ The tribe was dancing. Somewhere on the other side of this rocky wall there would be a dark circle, a glowing fire, and meat.” pg 186 chapter 12. The members of Jack’s tribe have lost touch with who they were before they crashed on the island and have become uncivilized.

  5. Loss of Hope • “The yelling ceased, and Samneric lay looking up in quiet terror. Roger advanced upon them as one wielding a nameless authority.” pg 182 chapter 11 It shows that everything ended for Ralph and he is now the exile.

  6. Destruction of Society • “Look at that! Call that a signal fire? That’s a cooking fire. Now you’ll eat and there’ll be no smoke. Don’t you understand? There may be a ship out there.” pg 178 chapter 11 This is an example of loss of a common goal. • “I just take the conch to say this. I can’t see no more and I got to get my glasses back. Awful things has been done on this island. I voted for you for chief. He’s the only one who ever got anything done. So now you speak, Ralph, and tell us. Or else.” pg 170 chapter 11 This shows that Piggy is calling Ralph to step up as a leader or else no one can survive. • “’They hate you, Ralph. They’re going to do you.’ ‘They’re going to hunt you tomorrow’” pg 188 chapter 12 Jack’s tribe is going to kill Ralph, showing they have gone crazy.
