  1. Mobile Total Conversation Prof. Gregg Vanderheiden Erik Zetterström

  2. Telecom RERC 2009-2014 Trace Center, Gallaudet Univ. , Omnitor ”Ensure that people with the full range of disabilities are able to access the full range of telecommunication needed for employment, education, safety, and daily living and are able to participate in society equitably and alongside those without disabilities.” • Telecommunication during emergencies • Interoperability and transition between current and next generation telecom access. • Accessible telecollaboration

  3. Telecom RERC • Open-source Android and iPhone Total Conversation clients, • Accessibility of emergency services • Contributions to implementation of harmonized accessible communication. • Technology transfer and contribution to standards • Gateway service for text telephony (TTY), IM and others to real-time text. The contents of this presentation were developed with funding from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, U.S. Department of Education, grant number H133E090001 (RERC on Telecommunications Access). However, those contents do not necessarily represent the policy of the Department of Education, and you should not assume endorsement by the Federal Government.

  4. Total Conversation • It’s the inclusive way for everyone to communicate! • It allows simultaneous communication in video, audio and real-time text.

  5. Total Conversation

  6. Total Conversation Why real-time text? • In some situations it is more convenient to write, for example in noisy situations or when conveying complex information. • For some people text is the preferred means to communicate. • Real-time provides a better sense of an actual conversation.

  7. Use cases • Person-to-Person • Person-to-Relay Service • Person-to-Emergency Service

  8. Emergency Services The EU project REACH112 (www.REACH112.eu) is deploying Total Conversation for person-to-person and emergency services, in both mobile and fixed networks. NENA i3 specifies that real-time text should be supported for ip-based calls to emergency services. Harmonised standards for emergency service calls are important to save lives.

  9. Standards Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) IETF RFC3261 (call control) RTP IETF RFC3550 (media transport) Audio ITU-T G.711 Video ITU-T H.263, ITU-T H.264 Real-time text ITU-T T.140 (presentation), IETF RFC4103 (transport)

  10. Challenges in Mobile Networks • Powerful CPU • Battery life • Bandwidth • Net neutrality • Equal Access to Telephony ServicesWhen travelling abroad the cost of a voice call may increase 5 to 10 times, but the cost of a Total Conversation call might be 100 times or more expensive due to the high costs of data roaming.

  11. Linphone Cross plattform code; Android, iOS, Linux and Blackberry. Project and source code availble at: www.linphone.org GNU GPL v2 license (except oRTP, which is LGPL) TelecomRERC 2009-2014 has added support for; real-time text (T.140), H.264 video for Android, H.264 video for iOS is planned.
