  1. LEARNING ABOUT SHORT STORIES ELEMENTS OF SHORT STORIES LEARNING ABOUT SHORT STORIES

  2. ELEMENTS OF SHORT STORIES • The possibilities for short stories are as endless as the bounds of a writer’s imagination. • No two stories are ever alike. • There are however, some elements that all short stories have in common.

  3. CHARACTERS • Characters are the people or animals who take part in a story’s action. • Characters are directed by MOTIVATION. • This is like people in real life!!!!! • Motivation is the reason or reasons that explain why characters act as they do. • Brainstorm with your partner a list of events that might get someone motivated.

  4. CHARACTERIZATION • CHARACTERIZATION is the way a writer reveals a character’s personality and qualities. • In direct characterization, the writer describes the character • In indirect characterization, the writer reveals the character through speech and actions

  5. Characterization practice • Procedures • Warm Up • With a partner briefly review the plot of Cinderella. • Think particularly about the stepmother and stepsisters. • Describe these characters – using adjectives to tell what they are like and verbs to show what they do.

  6. GRAPHIC ORGANIZER • Make a graphic organizer. • Stepmother Stepsisters Adj. Verbs Adj. Verbs

  7. Direct/Indirect Characterization What you have brainstormed is called Direct and Indirect Characterization. When an author uses adjectives to tell what a character is like, it is called DirectCharacterization. When an author uses verbs to show what a character does, it is called Indirect Characterization

  8. THEME • THEME is the central message expressed in a story. • It is the underlying meaning of a piece of literature. • It usually includes an observation about life. • It could be a moral of a story, a teaching or an observation about human experience.

  9. WHAT IS THE THEME? • You are never actually told what the theme is in a story. • You determine the theme from the characters and action in the story. • In short, you must determine the theme of a story on your own. • It evolves slowly and it is almost like solving a mystery.

  10. What is the theme? • What is the theme in Aladdin? • Could it be that love is not learned through the riches of the wallet, but of the heart? • How would you describe it? • What is the theme of Beauty and the Beast?

  11. UNIVERSAL THEME • A UNIVERSAL THEME is a message about life that is expressed in different cultures and time periods.

  12. UNIVERSAL THEMES • *HARD WORK ALWAYS PAYS OFF IN THE END. • *CRIME DOES NOT PAY! • *LOVE CONQUERS ALL. • *GOOD VERSUS EVIL

  13. Communicating Across CulturesLiterature is an excellent vehicle for communicating ideas across cultures. • Writers from around the world speakfrom their own experiences and write about theme that relates to their own land. • By reading the literature from other countries or different areas of our own country, we can learn so much about how others view life.
