  1. EDUC 430 Community Field Experience Rod Brown, Keith McPherson & John Yamamoto Program Coordinators, UBC Vancouver

  2. COMMUNITY FIELD EXPERIENCE Research informs us that such “non-formal” educational involvement helps teachers develop a broader, more holistic view of education than practica limited to classroom settings. The CFE is guided by research and based on beliefs that teacher candidates, community partners and students all benefit.

  3. A History of the CFE at UBC… EPBCO – Extended Practicum Beyond the Classroom Option Running since 2004 (?) with both science and fine arts teacher candidates, at selected sites (HR MacMillan Space Centre, Vancouver Aquarium, Science World, Vancouver Art Gallery) International and Rural Practica Selected Volunteer Sites (Corrections, VSB Alternate Schools, WJ Mouat Outdoor Ed Program, etc.) Pilot Program 2011-12 (1 cohort each in Secondary/Elementary) 2012-13 – Enhanced Practicum for all B. Ed students

  4. 2011-12 Pilot Enhanced Practicum Roughly 100 students took part in various ‘enhanced’ experiences during this year;

  5. “Teaching at the SOS Village in Mbabane, Swaziland is one of those once in a lifetime opportunities that does not come along very often. I seized this amazing opportunity and am so glad that I did. Not only do you learn about another culture but being welcomed into the SOS Village with open arms and the relationships that you make with these inspirational children is something that I hold very dear to my heart. It was an experience that I will look fondly back on for the rest of my life.” - Laura S, 2013 Elementary TC “It was awesome! Allowed me the opportunity to get some experience in the environment I want to be in for my teaching career (alt ed). Best part of my practicum, by far.” - Scott, 2012 Elementary TC “The UBC Enhanced Practicum in Uganda, Africa was inspiring, humbling and rewarding! We were given the privilege to serve and share our teaching philosophy and skills with students and instructors who were willing to embrace the idea of change. The Ugandan people taught me the power of teaching in a local community with limited resources but the heart to persevere and overcome obstacles with undeniable faith and commitment! It was truly one of the best experiences that I have participated in and would definitely encourage others to take a step of faith and discover yourself in a new culture where love, passion and community can be experienced!” - Edlynne V., 2013 Secondary TC The CFE Experience…Student Reflections

  6. “This was a wonderful opportunity and enabled me to gain a perspective of what learning and teaching in a rural community would be like, it was one of the best elements of my Bachelor of Education experience.” - Sarah C, 2011 (Pilot) Secondary TC “Sea to Sky Outdoor School was a fabulous place to complete this practicum. I learned about about experiential learning and how I could apply it to my classroom in the future.” - Conchita, 2012 Elementary TC “My enhanced practicum left me full of inspiration and creative energy. For 3 weeks I worked alongside like-minded professionals committed to building bridges across difference through the education of First Nations history through First Nations art and culture and was reminded that work can actually contribute to a balanced life when it is exciting and fulfilling. My colleagues at the gallery were encouraging and supportive, offering me a perfect balance of autonomy and guidance. I came away from the experience with new professional contacts, mentors, friends, and the reassurance that I am indeed on the right path.” - Rachel T, 2013 Secondary TC The CFE Experience…Student Reflections
