The Holocaust: Final Stage 1942-1945 • The Killings Begin • Six killing centers are established in Poland • By 1942, Nazis building huge, efficient extermination camps • Weak (mostly women, children, elderly, sick) killed immediately • Rest are stripped naked, valuables taken, and sent to gas chambers designed as showers • Dead bodies are then cremated. • Up to 8,000 people killed in one day • Band of Brothers “ Why We Fight” clip: concentration camps (10min) • Oprah and Wiesel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KugVjbq6Si8

Response to the Holocaust: How do you seek justice? • Nuremberg Trials 1945-1949 • were a series of trials held in Nuremberg, Germany • purpose: indicted Nazi war criminals (22) • serves as the model for war crimes , crimes against humanity today • it is a International Military Tribunal • Creation of Israel 1948 • Declaration of Human Rights-Dec 1948 • Declares a set of rights that all human beings are entitled
