  2. 1. WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW

  3. When you read the prompt and brainstorm topics, be sure you select a topic that you know well. Let’s practice.

  4. SAMPLE EXPOSITORY PROMPT Incredible inventions have been created throughout history. Think about an invention that you feel has been very important. Now write to explain the importance of that invention.

  5. Which of the following inventions would make good topics for this prompt? Be prepared to explain your choice(s). telephone televisions electricity light bulb refrigerator automobile cell phone computer stove air conditioning iPad airplane vacuum cleaner Kindle X-box 360

  6. What is the problem with these topics? • technology • electronics • medicine • transportation • computer • cell phones • antibiotics • airplane

  7. SAMPLE PERSUASIVE PROMPT Motivational speakers such as community leaders, celebrities, athletes, etc., often speak to students on a wide variety of subjects. Think about someone you wish would speak to the students at your school. Write to convince your principal why the individual you chose should speak to the students at your school.

  8. 2. SELECT THE BEST SUPPORT

  9. Support to Consider • Tell a Story • Describe an Observation • Paint a Picture

  10. Tell a Story • Topic: Students should read in order to do well in school. • Last year in my Civics class, we were required to read chapters from the textbook to help us with what we were learning in class. During the first nine weeks, I never read at home and did not do well on the tests. Once I started reading the chapters, I started understanding the concepts, and the tests were a breeze.

  11. Describe an Observation • Topic: Fame leads to destructive behavior. • Justin Bieber has received a lot of negative attention lately for his reckless behavior. He was arrested for doing drugs, driving without a license, and vandalizing his neighbor’s home. Being famous seems to have made him feel he is above the law.

  12. Paint a Picture • Topic: Teachers should be required to use group work because it prepares students for the workplace. • Picture the typical office in America. Excited shouts are heard from the conference room where employees are brainstorming ideas for a new IPad app. Workers crowd around a computer screen putting together an advertising campaign. The offices of today are not lined up in rows like the silent classrooms we sit in each day.

  13. Students should volunteer because it helps the community. What would best support this statement? • Tell a story • Describe an Observation • Paint a Picture

  14. More money should be spent on the environment to protect our children’s future. What would best support this statement? • Tell a story • Describe an Observation • Paint a Picture

  15. My favorite teacher is Miss Brown because she made learning math fun. What would best support this statement? • Tell a story • Describe an Observation • Paint a Picture

  16. 3. PLAN YOUR SPECIFIC SUPPORT

  17. Plan for 5-Paragraph Persuasive EssayWhat’s missing?

  18. Now, you try.

  19. 4. TAKE THE TIME TO DEVELOPYOUR SUPPORT

  20. Development of Support May Be: • Detailed description of the story or situation • Explanation or clarification of your observation • Reasoning for how your support ties back to your thesis

  21. Plan for 4-Paragraph Expository Essay

  22. Body Paragraph #1

  23. Topic Sentence Support Honesty is one of the best qualities to have in a friend. My brother’s friend, Jay, is a perfect example of an honest friend. Jay is always nice and fun to be around, but he is never afraid to tell my brother when he is acting like a jerk. My brother says that makes him trust Jay more because he never has to worry about Jay talking behind his back or being fake. On the other hand, it’s obvious that some celebrities, like Justin Bieber, are surrounded by fake friends. An honest friend wouldn’t let Justin think it’s okay to egg people’s houses or punch limo drivers. In fact, Justin’s lack of honest friends might be one of the reasons he ends up doing jail time.Without truthfulness, there is no trust; without trust, there is no friendship. Development Support Development Concluding Sentence

  24. Your Turn!Body Paragraph #2

  25. Your Turn! Body Paragraph #2 In addition to being honest, a good friend should be a great listener. Imagine having an awful day and just needing to vent about it. I remember calling my best friend, Ashley, when I didn’t make the basketball team.Being a great friend means knowing when to give advice and when to just listen without judgment.
