  3. The AAUP Mission • Defend Principles of Academic Freedom and Shared Governance • Define Professional Standards • Promote Economic Security for tenure track, non-tenure track, full and part-time faculty • Organize Supporters to improve higher education

  4. The AAUP at OU • OU faculty union body for over forty years • Represents over 800 TT and NTT Faculty • Leadership is provided by members on the AAUP Executive Committee • Individual units are represented by the AAUP Advisory Forum • Operating under a five-year Agreement negotiated in 2015

  5. 2015-2020 Agreement  Provides standards and definitions regarding: • Academic titles, association rights and university management rights • Professional responsibilities • Compensation and merit pay procedures • Insurance and benefits including health, dental, vision, retirement and tuition

  6. 2015-2020 Agreement  Provides standards and definitions: • Sabbatical, paid, and unpaid leaves • Faculty travel • Academic calendar and appointment dates • Grievance procedures • Discipline and Discharge • Faculty employment, review, tenure and promotion

Tenure and the Agreement - All faculty reviews are bound by the University Standards for Re-employment, Promotion, and Tenure (see Appendix D & pp. 88-90) • Each unit creates specific guidelines (Review Statements) that conform with these standards in consultation with the individual College or School and the Office of the Provost • Review Statements define expectations in teaching, research, and service

The Agreement and the Review Process Paragraph 41 (pp. 12-26) of the Agreement defines the tenure review process including: • Dates for submissions of materials • Composition of review bodies including the Committee on Appointments and Promotions (“CAP”) and the Faculty Review and Promotion Committee (“FRPC”) • 41.c.1 review: Unit → Dean (option CAP) → Provost • 41.c.2 review: Unit → CAP (Dean) → Dean (option FRPC) → Provost • 41.c.4 review: Unit → CAP (Dean) → FRPC → Provost

  9. Navigating Paragraph 41 • Familiarize yourself with the Agreement and its requirements • Know yourunit’s Review Statement expectations for each review level • Seek out faculty mentors with experience in successfully negotiating the requirements of each review level • Develop a network or colleagues from outside of OU who can speak to the value of your contributions as well as explain them to “intelligent non-experts”
