Rockefeller developed new ways to compete and gain higher profits. Carnegie Steel prospered due to Carnegie’s use of vertical consolidation (integration); gaining control of the many different businesses that made up all the phases of steel production. Rockefeller, on the other hand, expanded the Standard Oil Company by employing horizontal consolidation (integration); bringing together many of the independent oil refineries under one company (United States History text, pp. 109-111; America: Pathways, pp. 240-241). • On a clean piece of paper, define either “horizontal consolidation” or “vertical consolidation”, however, you are not allowed to use these specific words in your definition.
