  3. “Emerging” national economies are countries in the “South,” which have high rates of economic growth, as measured by capitalist indexes. Of the 32 emerging economies, China, India, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, and Russia are the newest “emerging” economies. Other major emerging economies are South Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore. All the emerging economies accounted for 30 % of the world’s GDP, and 50% if measured by “purchasing-power parity” in 2007. They exported 45 % of the world total; consumed over 50% of the world’s energy; and had 75 % of global foreign-exchange reserves.
