  2. Background • Lomond Wines was established in July 2004 as a joint venture between Distell and Lomond Properties, whose shareholders include Wayne Gabb, Jannie Kuiper, and Dave Mostert. • Lomond is in the Gansbaai area and situated in the valley of the Uilenkraal River. Located at a very southerly latitude, - 34° 34΄ south, it is one of a handful of wine farms with a Cape Agulhas appellation of origin. • The farm falls within the Winkler Zone 2, with relatively little variation in day-night temperatures throughout the year. Located about 8km from the sea as the crow flies, it is kept cool by the southwesterly and southeasterly winds during the summer months. The prevailing cool temperatures mean that vineyards tend to ripen several weeks later than their Stellenbosch counterparts, with harvesting taking place in March. • Lomond is a member of the Walker Bay Conservancy and has applied for champion status with the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative (BWI), the highest accreditation by this body, which rewards producers for sustainable wine-growing practices.

  3. The winemaking • The handpicked and hand-sorted grapes were de-stemmed and crushed into stainless steel tanks, fermented over seven days, reaching a peak temperature of 27ºC. The juice was pumped over every three hours for 25 minutes at a time. • On completion of fermentation, the wine spent a further three days on the skins for optimal colour and flavour extraction. The free-run juice was then drained off and the skins pressed gently. Malolactic fermentation occurred naturally. • The wine was transferred into small new French oak, where it spent 16 months. After racking, the wine was given an egg white fining and gentle filtration before bottling.

LOMOND SYRAH 2007 • Colour:Ruby red. • Bouquet:Ripe prunes and cherries with hints of wood spices and notes of pepper in the background. • Taste:The wine is full and rich with a velvety mouth feel and a fresh fruity character beautifully integrated with elegant supple, soft tannins. • Alcohol:14.2vol% • Wholesale: S$36.00 • Retail: S$41.50

  5. LOMOND SAUVIGNON BLANC 2009 • Colour: Brilliantly clear with a green tinge. • Bouquet:Juicy ripe figs, asparagus and an infusion of tropical fruit. • Taste:Fresh and medium bodied with minerality and flint, while the ripe fig, green flavours and tropical fruit carry through onto the palate. • Food pairing: The winemaker suggests serving it with duck, crisp green salads and grilled seafood or enjoy on its own as a refreshing summer wine. • Wholesale: S$33.00 • Retail: S$38.00
