  3. New PD Rule • COM-14-067  • Current rule is in effect until June 30, 2014 • Emergency Rule was approved to go into effect July 1, 2014 • Public comment recently ended for for the pending rule to hopefully go into effect by November

PD Funding • LS-14-054 • For the 2014-15 school year and each school year thereafter, professional development funding shall be equal to an amount up to thirty-two dollars and forty cents ($32.40) multiplied by the school district’s previous school year average daily membership.  The estimated funding amount for the 2014-2015 school year is $26.67, multiplied by the school district’s previous school year average daily membership (ADM).

  8. Flexibility in PD Choices • PLCs • Book studies • Individualized PD • Meet the PGP for 18, 2 scheduled, dyslexia, specific job PD, but the rest can be flexible • Meet the definition of professional development (Section 4) and criteria or focus area (Section 8)

  10. PD providers We have 15 education service cooperatives We have 12 STEM centers on university campuses We currently have 6 ERZ sites on university campuses The ADE Professional Development unit provides additional support as needed

  11. ADE PD Unit • We can provide support in addition to cooperatives, STEM centers, and ERZ sites • Literacy, Math, and Science all have statewide initiatives that we train our field specialists to provide • We also build PD for ArkansasIDEAS

  13. What’s Hot • Dyslexia • Disciplinary Literacy • Science Standards • LDC/MDC (Literacy/Math Design Collaborative) in the ERZs

Dyslexia • Public comment on the rule recently ended • We have hired a ADE Dyslexia Specialist • We have produced the professional awareness piece for all educators which is housed on ArkansasIDEAS with more to come • We are currently working on the Dyslexia Resource Guide • We have provided introductory training to specialists at the cooperatives • We are working on a plan for training/certifying dyslexia specialist and therapist

  15. Disciplinary Literacy • 2 pieces we are working on: • A) Hired 5 nationally renowned presenters to come into Arkansas and provide PD for our specialists. This will be recorded and made available • B) Hired 5 teachers to provide professional development to educators at each cooperative in Science, Foreign Language, PE, Social Studies, Fine Arts • More to follow

Science Standards • The state board voted to endorse the use of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) to compile a set of Arkansas standards • This will be committee work • These standards will be based on the NGSS and A Framework for K-12 Science Education • We are working with field specialists to develop professional development for Planning for New Science Standards

LDC + MDC @ ERZ • The ERZ sites are coordinating professional development in the Coaching aspect of LDC/MDC to build capacity in schools • The ERZ sites are coordinating professional development to be provided by Allison Zmuda and Jay McTighe • These projects will take place this year and next

ERZ 2014 Dates • MDC Leadership Training – Gail Snider • May 20 – UAM – Monticello • May 21 – SAU – Magnolia • May 22 – Henderson – Arkadelphia • June 3 – UAFS – Fort Smith • June 4 – UA – Fayetteville • June 26 – ASU – Jonesboro • LDC Leadership Training – Connie Echols • May 14 – UAM – Monticello • May 15 – Henderson – Arkadelphia • June 19 – ASU – Jonesboro • July 17 - UA – Fayetteville • Not all ERZs had an available date to facilitate this training

  19. ERZ Dates • Allison Zmuda • Day 1 – October 20-23, 2014 • Day 2 – March 2-5, 2015 • These dates do not have a location yet.  There will be four locations with each one being the same training. • Jay McTighe • May 5th and 6th, 2015 • No location yet on this also
