  2. Some success “I am really enjoying my current job as a Cat Risk Analyst. Utilising my geography and analytical skills on a daily basis….I was wondering if you are still running the professional practice module. I know I benefitted a lot from it and even got my short intern role at JBA from Matthew via his talk. I also recently found out that was one reason why I was approached for the role I am in now…..I would happily come and give a talk to the students about my role.

  3. Aims of the module • Introduce students to environmental science as a professional career • Explore the tensions between academic and applied science • Initiate professional development training and networking

  4. Content • Seminars led by visiting professionals • Lectures to explore tensions between academic and applied work • Professional development workshops run by Careers Centre • Student-led networking and professional development activities

  5. Seminars Speakers talk about • their organization and its career opportunities • the monitoring or modelling science that underpins that work • working -vs- learning • personal experiences of finding their job After each seminar there is an opportunity to meet the speaker.

  7. Tailored workshops by LU Careers staff • used to kick-start students’ professional development training • career networking • personality evaluation • professional development

Networking and PD activities • Students are required to develop their professional skills and training by undertaking career networking and professional development activities. • join and attend events organized by professional bodies (e.g. CIWEM, IEEM, IEMA) • work experience or shadowing with prospective employers • relevant skills and training courses • voluntary work (e.g. Local Authorities, BTCV, ART)

  9. Assessment • An essay on the tensions between applied and academic environmental science, informed by the seminar series • A reflective evaluation of (minimum)10 hours of professional networking and development activities.

  10. More importantly • Personal links to a selection of relevant individuals • Membership of relevant professional bodies and associated networking • Structured engagement re searching for jobs in the environmental sector

  11. Scope for an undergraduate equivalent? • Current PGT module runs with 6-12 students… • Broaden to Geography • Possibility of integrating elements into an academic module on Geographies of Employment
