  1. South-East European initiatives for regional eInfrastructure sustainability EGI workshop, EGEE08, Istanbul The SEE-GRID-SCI initiative is co-funded by the European Commission under the FP7 Research Infrastructures contract no. 211338

  2. Topics SEE strategy towards sustainability Relationship with EGI The SEE-GRID-SCI initiative is co-funded by the European Commission under the FP7 Research Infrastructures contract no. 211338

  3. Path towards sustainability SEEREN1/2: establishing the regional inter-NRN interconnectivity and GEANT links SEEGRID1/2: building the regional Grid infrastructure within and beyond EGEE SEEFIRE: studying the feasibility of long-term solutions for dark fiber backbone in the region SEELIGHT: implementation of the lambda facility in the region BSI: Caucasus region connections SEE-GRID-SCI: eInfrastructure for large-scale environmental science: meteorology, seismology, env. protection. Inclusion of Caucasus. SEERA-EI: regional programme managers collaboration towards common eInfrastructure vision and strategy The SEE-GRID-SCI initiative is co-funded by the European Commission under the FP7 Research Infrastructures contract no. 211338

  4. Vision: converged communication and service infrastructure for SEE The SEE-GRID-SCI initiative is co-funded by the European Commission under the FP7 Research Infrastructures contract no. 211338

  5. Network Sustainability • SEE-LIGHT: South-East European Lambda Network Facility for R&E • Proposal for the deployment of an advanced regional network infrastructure (lambda network facility) for R&E, under the Hellenic Plan for the Economic Reconstruction of the Balkans (HiPERB). • 4 countries committed, others in progress • SEENet: a management body for SEELIGHT 5 Sustainability results & SEE Future plans The SEE-GRID-SCI initiative is co-funded by the European Commission under the FP7 Research Infrastructures contract no. 211338

  6. Grid Sustainability Large infrastructure built through 2 projects User community buy-in secured National structuring via NGIs Kick-off of national-level projects But regional dimension crucial in terms of joint operations and human network The SEE-GRID-SCI initiative is co-funded by the European Commission under the FP7 Research Infrastructures contract no. 211338

  7. SEE-GRID-SCI: The project Contract n°: RI-211338 Project type: I3 Start date: 01/05/2008 Duration: 24 months Total budget: 3 214 690 € Funding from the EC: 2 500 000 € Total funded effort, PMs: 676.5 Web site: www.see-grid-sci.eu The SEE-GRID-SCI initiative is co-funded by the European Commission under the FP7 Research Infrastructures contract no. 211338

  8. SEE-GRID-SCI: Project objectives Engaging international user communities (meteorology, seismology, environmental protection) and providing application-specific service extensions Providing infrastructure for new communities Consolidating actions towards long-term sustainability and European Grid Initiative inclusion Strengthening the regional and national human network The SEE-GRID-SCI initiative is co-funded by the European Commission under the FP7 Research Infrastructures contract no. 211338

  9. SEE-GRID-SCI: Horizontal actions: NGIs The SEE-GRID-SCI initiative is co-funded by the European Commission under the FP7 Research Infrastructures contract no. 211338 • Structuring NGIs in all countries in the region • Achieve stable and well-established organization and operations, as well as government recognition • Stimulate kick-off of national-level Grid projects • Secure membership of all non-EGEE countries in relevant European Grid bodies • Provide active support for NGI establishment in other developing regions • Public documents: • NGI guidelines document, SEE-GRID-2 • NGI metrics specification

  10. NGI status MDGrid 05/07 MGKK 2003 Before SEE-GRID-2 RoGrid 05/02 CRO-GRID 01/04 AEGIS 04/05 NGI-BA 03/06 BGGC 01/03 During SEE-GRID-2 MARGI 04/05 MGI 11/06 Planned for 2nd Year TR-GRID 09/03 HellasGrid 11/03 The SEE-GRID-SCI initiative is co-funded by the European Commission under the FP7 Research Infrastructures contract no. 211338

  11. Political Sustainability: SEERA-EI "INFRA-2008-3.1: ERA-NET supporting cooperation for research infrastructures in all S&T fields“ Likely to start: 1 Jan 2009 Duration: 36 months Total budget: 2 000 000 € Funding from the EC: 1 500 000 € Total funded effort, PMs: 451 The SEE-GRID-SCI initiative is co-funded by the European Commission under the FP7 Research Infrastructures contract no. 211338

  12. SEERA-EI: partnership Ministry partners + eInfra partners as support The SEE-GRID-SCI initiative is co-funded by the European Commission under the FP7 Research Infrastructures contract no. 211338

  13. SEERA-EI: objectives Core Objective – Develop and strengthen the coordination and cooperation of national eInfrastructures programmes in the region of South-East Europe. The SEE-GRID-SCI initiative is co-funded by the European Commission under the FP7 Research Infrastructures contract no. 211338

  14. SEERA-EI: objectives O1 - Enable common dialogue and exchange of information between national programme owners O2 – Analyse state of the art in national programmes O3 - Reduce fragmentation and improve coordination across SEE segment of ERA in field of RI, on the level of national programmes, and avoid creating niches of non-standardised programmes O4 - Facilitate efficient set-up and support for national eInfrastructure programmes, in coordination with common guidelines and regional vision O5 - Enable concrete cooperation of programme owners and common planning and development of join activities, both within project duration and beyond it in long term O6 - Formulate a common vision and strategy O7 – Establish a long-term platform for sustained dialogue between programme owners that will extend beyond project lifetime O8 – Enable information exchange with rest of ERA, carry out international collaboration activities, and contribute to EU policy on eInfrastructures The SEE-GRID-SCI initiative is co-funded by the European Commission under the FP7 Research Infrastructures contract no. 211338

  15. SEE region and EGI: perspectives NGIs are already stable and mature in all countries Regional network and Grid has strong perspectives for sustainability Data layer is being built up Regional collaborations are established in various communities, ad-hoc or project-based Political support for national-level eInfrastructure programmes and regional programmes and operational solutions is being secured (SEEnet, SEGI) EGI seen as a viable model, however with some features that do not cater for regional sustainability and collaboration The SEE-GRID-SCI initiative is co-funded by the European Commission under the FP7 Research Infrastructures contract no. 211338

  16. SEE region and EGI: perspectives EGI.org as a broker for scientific collaborations not seen as a flexible or desirable model. ("EGI.org deciding on allocation of project members to VOs“; "allocating resources to VOs") More dynamic, free and flexible model is needed. Specialized Support Centers needing EGI.org blessing similarly restrict the open scientific market "formation will be carried out under assessment by the EGI"” EGI.org seen by SEEGRID only as purely operational coordination/harmonization body Fazing out of regional operational coordination is not seen as either efficient or necessary step -> SEEGRID will continue strong regional operations The SEE-GRID-SCI initiative is co-funded by the European Commission under the FP7 Research Infrastructures contract no. 211338

  17. Conclusions Path towards sustainability laid down through a set of complementary and coordinated activities National dimension is crucial: NRN, NGI Regional dimension as a driver and articulator EGI collaboration is essential, but in a more flexible, lightweight manner, with minimum impact on free national and regional collaborations EGI should keep the door open to regional initiatives The SEE-GRID-SCI initiative is co-funded by the European Commission under the FP7 Research Infrastructures contract no. 211338
