BLOOD VESSELS • Arteries - carry oxygenated blood away from heart to the capillaries • Capillaries - smallest blood vessels that have extremely thin walls to allow substances to pass to surrounding cells and tissues • Veins - carry deoxygenated blood away from capillaries to heart © 2004 Delmar Learning, a Division of Thomson Learning, Inc.

  9. BLOOD PRESSURE • Systolic blood pressure is the pressure created on artery walls when the heart pumps blood into the arteries • Diastolic pressure is the lessened force of blood measured when the ventricles relax © 2004 Delmar Learning, a Division of Thomson Learning, Inc.
