  2. Regents Review Day 08 Reproduction

  3. Mitosis • Mitosis is when one cell splits into 2 identical cells. • Mitosis is used for: • Asexual reproduction • Tissue repair • Fetal development

  4. Mitosis

  5. Mitosis

  6. Meiosis • Meiosis is ONLY used for making eggs and sperm in sexual reproduction. • Meiosis gives genetic variety through crossing over, sorting of genes, and recombination.

  7. Meiosis

  8. Meiosis

  9. Female Reproductive System • Female reproductive structures: • Ovaries: make and release eggs. Release the hormones estrogen and progesterone, which regulate the female reproductive cycle. • Oviduct (fallopian tubes): connects ovary to uterus; it is where fertilization takes place

  10. Female Reproductive System • Female reproductive structures: • Uterus: where the fetus develops • Vagina (birth canal): where the baby comes out. • Cervix: separates the uterus from the vagina; must open (dilate) to allow birth.

  11. Female Reproductive System

  12. Male Reproductive System • Male reproductive structures: • Penis: delivers the sperm • Testes: produce the sperm and the hormone testosterone, which regulates the male reproductive cycle. • Reproductive glands: secrete (release) fluids (semen) to feed and protect the sperm.

  13. Male Reproductive System

  14. Fertilization and Development • Fertilization is when the sperm and egg come together to form the zygote, which develops into an embryo, then a fetus through many mitotic divisions. • All of the cells contain the same DNA, but different genes get turned on through differentiation.
